So essentially their intended role, at least in the early stages of war, were fairly static infantry who conducted relatively short range foot patrols of the surrounding area and crawled all over the bridges at regular intervals checking for charges.
From a game perspective they'd be infantry with a possible addition of Combat Engineering/Demolitions skill (probably about one in ten trained with disarming and disposal).
