While it was a bit of fun to point out that Rainbow Six's file link was now linked to a Chinese porn and gambling site, it should serve as a reminder to not just let your defunct sites go quietly into the great Internet graveyard and beyond.....because there is no such thing.

Many domain names and websites that are abandoned are snatched up by overseas porn hustlers or worse. I doubt that many forum member's employer would be amused if Twitterverse somehow put out that you were hosting a porn site or offering sex cruises complete with personal porno shoots in the Caribbean. I heard of one guy that found himself charged with distributing kiddie porn after a deadlink he had on a website he owned turned up linking to a kiddie porn site. Not sure if he got off or not, but I am certain his bank account lightened considerably from legal fees and whatnot not to mention the permanent reputation harm.

You gotta watch those deadlinks! If you have one you owned, you best check it out. You may have a VERY rude surprise waiting. If you are thinking of just abandoning a website, I'ld think again. While there may not be criminal charges, once your name is publicly associated with whatever unsavoriness is afoot on Twitter or Facebook, don't think for a minute that those folks can do anything more than take down the post (and that assumes that they will).
