Anyone got info about spices that are free-growing in California?
And which of those would be kind of abundant in a post-apoc. environment?

What part of Cali?
1.) Popiese our state flower. 2.) Mustard it grows damn near everywhere 3.) Millet hate the shit! 4.) Assorted peppers these can be ground into powder and used as spices. 6.) Salt, from several sources, not a spice but a mineral but it works.> There are a few more that elude me at the moment.

I am looking at my backyard right now and it is full of weeds, my lawnmower is broken and I haven't had time to take it in for repairs. Needless to say it is rather high with grass and such, and what do I see,
millet we call them foxtails, its a form of primative grain, and yes mustard. I had it, it grows well in the soild here which is very compacted clay. Poppies of course Sunflowers are common Cotton used to be common <cotton seed oil> Salt from the ocean, but also from several salt flats and dty salt lakes in the desert. Hectorite, a mineral that is used in the making of condiments, some foods and makeup. Mint grows well Ginger grows Dandelions Bamboo is like a week Anything related to citrus is quite common Honey Sugar is another valuable crop <C&H sugar, well the C stands for California> Oh yeah, we also have the garlic capital of the world too And nuts, more almonds and walnuts than anywhere in the nation as well as coconuts, pistachios <second only to Iran> and cashews. Anyhow those are some more things that are pretty common and can be used as spices or extracts.

Some types of seaweed are edible and can be dried for longer and easier storage.
Sticking with the coastal theme one should always keep an eye out for drifting globs of whale snot. Ambergris is high value rare commodity. I seem to recall some kind of SE Asian seafood stock which is made by putting tiny shrimps, krill and other marine crustacea in a sack and burying it on the beach for a worryingly unhygienic duration.

Chico is the WINNNER!!!!!
GANJA, what a funny/dangerous adventure that might be players find a wild Mary Jane patch somewhere....or worse a cultivated and defended one which could be guarded or booby trapped/mined. I think pot would be pretty common in the twilight world as its pretty common today. Only people in twilight would be more upset and stressed with there lives, which might make people use more recreational drugs. Booze is pretty much the worlds favorite drug, but weed is pretty easy to grow. Tobbaco would be another good crop to plant....particularly in Europe! while this has nothing to do with spices.... it gave me game ideas clearly I have been in Burlington VT to long ![]() Brother in Arms |

I have grass in common use in my campaign - my players managed to build up a fair stash on their run back to Bremerhaven.
All for personal use of course ![]()

My particular section was tasked with being the targets for a company advancing to contact over about a week (and 50km or so) on foot. Meanwhile, one of the other sections was reinforcing the recon plattoon and causing sleepless nights for a company in defence. During one little "outing", they happened across a rather large plantation hidden deep within the training area (Wide Bay for those who's heard of it). Armed with nothing more than harsh language and blanks they had to guard the place for about 24 hours until the police arrived to take over, all the while well aware that the growers of the area tended to check on their crops fairly regularly and invariably travelled armed. They also often laid booby traps to catch the unwary. I don't think it need be said that there were some VERY relaxed soliders for the remainder of the exercise.... |

In my campaign Major Po has a wide variety of narcotics in his various medical bags. He has a fairly relaxed attitude towards the use of various drugs when his troops are having some down time. It carries on the vibe set by the original unit commander, Major John Lynch. He was basically a drug abusing, alcoholic head case. Unsurprisingly he didn't survive the Poland part of the campaign.
As a GM I can describe the effects of various illicit drugs quite accurately to my players as I have tried just about everything myself. Of course some of my players don't need descriptions of effects as they know them well.
