Ot: Arm yourself
Here we got what would you arm yourself with given the likely opportunity in today's world where you are now located?
I would probably grab my semi-auto M14 and Glock 19 because I have the most magazines and ammo for them. That or my Semi-auto Ak's for the same reason. I know you might not all have access to firearms, but if you could access one what would it likely be? Something old/outdated? Muzzle loader? Bow? Air rifle? what would you do? Try to get something from the police? or Black market? Hidden cache? Or would have to be a sword or spear, knife?? what would you do? BIA |

I like what comedian Bill Burr said about "preppers" in urban and suburban areas who buy food and supplies - but no gun.
"You're gathering supplies for the warlord before the fact!"

I orefer non conventional weapons.... McGyver style. Can of hairspray and a lighter, bleach in a spray bottle, cup of hot coffee. The moment your guard is down I am on you and your gun is now mine. And I am not above sacrificing a pawn to get to you... (nubile 18 year old in daisy duke shorts)
People know you have a gun just makes you a bigger target for someone with a bigger gun.

My trusty M1 Garand and Colt Mark IV Series 70. Nothing beats the classics!

Either an M1 Garand or a retro AR15 and a Colt Series 70. The AR has a 1-9 twist barrel. To link to the knife section, An M5 or KCB70 bayonet.

At least you live in canada and could potentially own a firearm. I think id go with anything over a hot cup of coffee. Seriously. as for the other guys sounds like M1's and 1911's are pretty common. I also have retro AR's I am just over 5.56 as a caliber for other than plinking. Other than my GF's lightweight AR I am over it. |

preppers with guns
I snicker when I think of the preppers with a 10 000 dollar armory and 100 dollar larder...

Guns...
I am reading into this that the question means that arming yourself is an act of self defense etc in an emergency situation. Also that the premise is that you may list whatever is realistically available at your location/area.
Up here hunting is pretty common and shotguns and hunting rifles are pretty commonplace. Also competitive and recreational shooting is pretty common. All told I think estimates are around 700 000-1 000 000 firearms in civilian hands counting legal and illegal weapons of all calibers including collections and museum pieces. The population is below 5 million. Goverment arsenals are thought to hold app. the same number of firearms - mind you decommissioning programs have been in place for decades to limit this number. Our license produced G3s are next on the list... For both hunting and sport semi auto weapons are restricted to some extent meaning that most makes of semi autos and some calibers are not common. 12 gage shotguns, most bolt action rifles and .22 rifles are somewhat prolific. I guess that in such a catastrophic event civilian weapons like these would be used. |

The real fun is figuring out what is the most common ammunition type to be found in a area. Once the SHTF no food or new ammunition is coming in so soon enough your scavenging. And you know how frustrating it will get when all the ammo you find is .22's and you only have a 5.56?

In my case it would be a 12 gauge shotgun with four round capacity, a 20 gauge single shot and a single shot 22 rifle - with about 50 rounds for each gun
plus several very good hunting knives and a crossbow that I bought off my neighbor a few years ago Now if it was 1997 and the TDM - would have been at my grandfathers house and would have had quite the arsenal to choose from including a Thompson he brought back from WWII and several pistols |
