OT: 1980s action series
Thought this might be an interesting topic. As someone born in the 1980s but who barely remembers them, it's very interesting to watch these from a modern perspective.
Pending the results of a vote at another site I frequent, I plan to do a spy game (freeform) set in the 1980s and also run a 21st century set sequel to The A-Team. |

I was wondering if any of you remember a movie that premiered on TV in the early 80's. It was called World War 3 and starred David Soul (of the original Salem's Lot fame) and Cathy Lee Crosby. It was set in Alaska near the pipeline in the future. The Russians were starved for energy and sent a Spetsnaz unit to capture the pipeline and due to weather only a National Guard unit commanded by David (supported by hot Cathy of course) with only small arms was available to oppose them. The battle for the pumping station was pretty good. Unfortunately, in the end, the Russians win and the President "pushes the button." If you can still find it; It is worth watching (even if the "good guys" lose).

1980s action shows...
Having a tough time remembering some, although I am a TV addict.
There was, of course McGyver (there's a challenge! a character without weapons skills!). I remember a lot of police shows (Tonight on Hill Street Blues...) Miami Vice at times featured Crockett and Tubbs weaponing up and zooming through Miami and southern Florida. There were the Vietnam shows Tour of Duty and China Beach. The action in China Beach usually did not involve gunfire. There were retreads/holdouts of Man From U.N.C.L.E. and Mission: Impossible.. Ah, V: The Visitors (invaders from beyond with limited numbers and some technological advantage vs earthling resistance, who objected to being eaten. Anyway, I went here and clicked action/adventure to be reminded... Uncle Ted |

On a semi related note, there was also Blue Thunder (film and TV series)
In the UK we had The Professionals

MacGyver has a genius-level intellect, and processes vast knowledge of lock picking, physics, chemistry, and archaeology; he has excellent observational skills and can pilot many kinds of vehicles and is skilled at bomb defusing MacGyver is proficient to a greater or lesser extent in Russian, German, French, Italian, Spanish, and American Sign Language, and knows how to use International maritime signal flags and Morse code. He's an avid outdoorsman with skills including snow skiing, and outdoor survival. Despite his acute fear of heights, he's highly skilled at mountain / rock climbing, hang gliding, and parachuting - static line and ripcord / HALO. His other hobbies include ice hockey, racing, and he has shown an interest in the arts of painting and guitar. Given all of this background I'd load him up in alsmost ever skill save weapons where he would score low

I'd love to do a CGI episode of MacGyver that ends 5 minutes after it starts because he refuses to use a firearm and gets fatally shot.

It's explained in the show his dislike of firearms was due to a childhood friend dying in a gun accident.
