I think that accountants would always be needed -- they might not be accounting for money, but they would morph into a profession more like supply specialists. You always need to know what you have on hand and what you don't...


Or KC could work for the Ferengi!

Agreed. You accountants have nothing to worry about, no matter how grim the future may turn out to be. Accountants have been around for 5,000 years or so- since the dawn of civilization. In fact, the first known writing system probably developed as an extension of basic accounting.


Mesopotamian scribes had to develop ideographs to differentiate between cattle, grain, tribute, and so on when they were keeping "financial" records for their city-states' command economies.


As for the future, I'll go with T2K. The triggers may end up being different, but the landscape won't.

The future that i think is most likely to occur is probably Children of Men. Nothing too futuristic, but all the racisim etc like locking up immigrants etc and some sort of disease (in this case male infertility or something), it just seems all very plausable.


I guess i should respond to all the accountant jokes. Look guys, its hard being an accountant, OK, i come to these boards for relief and support. I just ask you all to remember that its the other 99% of accountants that give the rest of us a bad name :-)

I've never seen an episode of star trek, the new or original version. I just never got into it. It never struck me as a likely scenario that would play out.

KC - Quick accountancy question. I'm getting grief from the accountants in work. This year we'd forecast a gross profit of 67%, we're sitting on 65.994% ytd. But to counter this we've beaten our sales target by £200,000 with still another month of trading to go. Am I being naive in thinking that the massively higher sales should count as some form of off set agaist the slight shortfall in GP and they're just being awkward? I just feel like we've had a pretty good year and they're pissing on my parade. I've also managed to bring the wage bill in 4.5% below target ytd.

Ugh, its been a while since i looked at this stuff!


Your asking if you can trade off 66% gross profit (against a target of 67%) by having a higher sales target (of 200,000 with a month to go)?


I'd say that gross profit is sales less expenses. So if your sales are up (as they appear to be) but profit% isnt quite high enough, then i'm thinking expenses must be up by say 210,000 so that profit/expenses is 66% instead of 67%. You say the wage bill is down 4.5% - question for you Tigger, have non-wage expenses gone up?


I'm thinking that if sales are up but the % is down slightly then overall expenses must have gone up by a slighter larger margin than your sales went up.


But really, we all know the answer here Tigger, so why beat about the bush, eh? Accountants being small minded individuals obsess over expenses more than they do sales. So even if you have increased sales by 200,000 your accountant is only going to be worried by any small increase in expense. I'm only partly joking. YOu get a tick for improved sales but no credit for it. But you will get a kick in the pants for any (any) increase in expense.


Personally i wouldnt sweat it, but then thats why i am viewed as an unsuccessful accountant :-)


Seriously though. If your sales have gone up but GP is down by 1% then i am thinking your total expenses must have gone up by slightly more than 200,000. If wages have gone down, then some other expense must have gone up by more than 4.5%.


Your accountant, if they are any good, should be able to explain what there thinking is so you can understand it.


Wages are likely under your direct control, so if they have gone down 4.5% then thats good. If some other expense has gone up by more than 4.5% then you will need to identify what it is. If its "rent" then maybe thats outside your control. If its water usage then maybe its in your control or not. Fine out whats "killed you" so you can at least know what item is doing the damage and give some thought about what you can do about it and if its even your fault.


Um, longer answer than i wanted to give, and a perfect example of why T2K doesnt have "Accountant" as a skill set :-)
