OT: Welcome to the Wasteland
I know some people have mentioned having ARMA II here before, and I have just recently purchased Combined Operations myself. I haven't had the chance to check out the lauded DayZ, but I have had a chance to play Wasteland. It's technically a 'mod' that doesn't require an install, you just need to find the right server and get going!
Wasteland is the perfect tie-in with T2000. The game is broken into three teams, BLUFOR, OPFOR, and Independent. BLUFOR is basically Americans and the OPFOR are Russians. Independents are like marauders, as they can prey on anyone in the map. Each team spends their time trying to survive in the map while achieving secondary objectives to help them out. You have to find food and water, fuel and ammo for your weapons, and fix up vehicles when they break. You can also find props to fortify your bases, creating cantonments if you want to look at it that way. In the brief hour I played, I teamed up with a BLUFOR convoy, helped fortify their base, help fix up a helicopter they found, and lay low as we were besieged by a bright orange Independent BRDM. After killing the driver, I gained our team a free BRDM I unfortunately had to quit, but there was talk of using the helicopter to assault the OPFOR base... So if you've got ARMA II (I think you need Operation Arrowhead as well, I got it in the Combined Operations package so I'm not sure), check out a Wasteland server and choose your team! I have the same problem. I went and bought a USB numpad I can plug in, but of course I've lost it.

Not OT at all!
Thanks for the hint, M-Type!
I checked on it (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hH2_5nM9ULA) - sweet! If i had better computer-skills, i would love to build (f.e.) the "Kalisz"-Scenario, or some parts of the "Warsaw"-Module. Just imagine that on mulitiplayer, based on the original GDW-scenarios... Just sad, that "Wasteland" does not support long term gaming (watch the video above for explanations about server-resets & hackers). But i would prefer some old-fashioned turn-based shit above any shooter/war-simulation anyway... (i would play T2k-modules/scenarios on the basis of "Jagged Alliance" or even "Fallout 2" for the next decade!). Anyway, M-Type is right! Good hunting with "Wasteland", people! |

I can't offer much help on the hackers, but I think I remember the side chat on the server I was on mentioning something about 'keeping your things', ie. Keeping the server going. Of course, it all depends on the server, and I believe most of the available servers reset. I myself do not have the chops to create/run a server, but it'd sure be fun to have a T2000 'roleplaying server' to play out on.

I've given this a shot over the last few days. My experiences boil down to a few common themes:
1. Find a great server, lots of people playing together. Build a base, defend it, attack the enemy, scrounge for materials, setup an aid station, etc. This is a TON of fun (until the server resets and you start from scratch). However, this represents a small percentage of playtime. 2. Find a server, lots of people. 95% of the people are on the 'independent team' and basically playing a solo FPS shoot-em-up. The one or two guys that are actually on your team show no interest in playing together. I wish these bozo's would stick to COD or something. This is how most of the servers I join are. 3. Find a server, lots of people split among the teams fairly evenly. Log in, find your friendly base. Then, friendly fire teamkilling. This goes on for a bit until the killer is ID. Then, rather than get kicked, he decides it's better off shooting friendlies in the leg to cripple you rather than kill you. That way, if you teamkill him back (defending yourself), YOU get kicked from the game. This is no fun, and has happened more than a couple of times. I keep server hopping until I find a decent server, but it's frustrating to find. If the server you find happens to have an admin on, it's a much better experience. Speaking for the mod itself, its amazing! I only wish the community were more mature... |
