What about all those bases/airfields?

One thing my group was also thinking about is, what happened at all those military bases around the country?

I mean sure all the major military units got deployed but there is always someone left over, gear, storage, supplies.

Once things broke down in the US what would/could the government do about them? Some of them seem to be inhabited by military units per cannon but thats a dozen maybe?

What have you done in your campaigns about them?

Most likely many of the bases are still occupied by the military but instead by small detachments of the various larger units, or by either militia, State Guard or remaining National Guard detachments. For an example look at The Last Submarine and how the MP unit was split up among several bases and firebases.

Some would be abandoned and thus open to being exploited for sure - example the bases that were stripped of useful items in the Corpus Christi area by marauders or in the Arkansas area by New America.

One place that abandoned military equipment and gear might be found at would be National Guard Armories - many small cities had them and they could have a lot of useful items left behind that even after being looted may have been overlooked.

By the way another great place for looting would be an Army Navy kind of store - i.e. the places that sell surplus or discarded gear - could easily see people having looted them for things look preserved food or weapons and leaving all kinds of other items behind that the average person wouldnt think worth taking with them that to a party could be vital - like batteries for radios, spare parts for vehicles, etc..

Isolated post like those in a desert or in the Arctic (former DEW line outpost) might have some materials left behind.
