OT - Vidja games
Man, after years (no - literally years) of trying and failing I got M1 Tank Platoon II working under Windows 7. It's not flawless (cutscenes don't play, nor does the "War College" training film library), but I can play a game beginning to end without any major hiccups like crash to desktop or being stuck with no way out of a menu.
If you gents will pardon me I'm off to fight the opening battles of the Twilight War

I just discovered that the guys who did Steel Panthers at War also had updated the game to Steel Panthers MBT so now you can fight battles from 1946 to today - real or imaginary. It is a free download. Right now doing a battle in southern Poland between the USA forces and Polish forces.

I spoke too soon. After an evening of successful gameplay it's back to crashing quitting out to desktop after a mission ends, rather than taking me back to the menu to pick up the next mission.
Sigh.

Speaking of games, has anyone been playing War Thunder?
They recently added US Ground Forces, and while the game does have a slight bias to the Soviets, it is still pretty fun, and even better, It is F2P, and they have it set up so there really is no advantage to those spending real money other than getting the same stuff the free players get just a bit faster.

I had a chance to play the World of Warships beta on a buddy's account a few days ago. Aircraft Carriers weren't in yet, but it's going to ruin a lot of your lives.

I have really three issues...... One, there is no teamwork or plan. The bonus of team work is lower than that for kills ....... So it is a pre-teen riot. Two, no difference between arcade style and battle simulation except you have to pay to re-spawn. Three, mixed tech levels....... It routinely sucks the fun out of the game to die in under 60 seconds round after round because you have an interwars 1926 biplane and others a flying late 1940s craft. Tanks are bad in this too. Saying that, the graphics, skins, and terrain is excellent. The vehicles are gorgeously done. Login: ArmySGT Last edited by ArmySGT.; 12-24-2014 at 11:56 AM. |

Yeah, especially at the Early Tiers it gets a little random. Once you get in a squad of like minded players, it improves.
The big difference between arcade is the the modelling (Performance wise of the tanks) are much better - more realistic, and then you don't have your auto-aim cross: You actually have to estimate your range. Of course, if you know how to read grids (The larger maps are 400m a grid, the smaller I think is 100 or 150, can't recall), it gives you a pretty good advantage. Sim, on the other hand, is a lot tougher. There is no autospotting, no name tags, nothing save the map, to give you any idea where the other guy is, so you have to use your eye to find them.
