And see, this is why I prefer the single life, no offense.

And yes, I think it's already been agreed by most, the remake is utter crap. The producers should have made the "villians" the CHINESE but they had to bow and kowtow to their masters. The makers of the original film themselves admitted in a documentary that it was a very controversial film even for it's time, but they made it anyway. It seems the producers of this shitty remake lost their balls, or were that desperate to reap potential (?) Chinese profits.

According to what I have read, much like the game Homefront, it was meant to be Chinese villains, but due to the potential loss of revenue from China, they made the villains into Koreans. In both cases, it would of made much more sense to have the Chinese be the antagonists.

And therein lies the reality. As I understand it now, the film makers were not pressured by the Chinese to change it, they were simply speculating how much extra money they could make if they could sell it in China.
They felt that the potential income from China was worth the rewrite.
It was all about them speculating on the potential profit - even though it destroys the integrity of the story and believability of the movie.

I no longer doubt your cynicism.

Well the name was originally inspired by the Stainless Steel Rat stories by Harry Harrison but I couldn't just steal the name so blatantly.
And the cynic part, well you can see for yourself how that fits in!

Perhaps they would have been better off making chinese the aggressors, and made an additional ending scene for release in China...

Where the last of the American guerillas are rounded up, admit that they were selfish to have opposed the Chinese improvement of American society, apologize for the damage they caused, and accept re-education, and end with a military parade and some good martial music.

Both audiences would have been very happy.

(I have not seen the remake. Yet.)

ROFLMAO!!!

Considering the level of nationalism the Chinese are attempting to drum up in their country lately, having an ending like that would likely go over very well with them.
