Default OT: Creepy PM

Raellus 08-14-2008, 05:55 PM Sorry to bump a thread with this OT querry but I need some advice.

I just got a creepy PM from someone called "forluran".

I'd report it to a moderator but we don't really seem to have one.

Anyone else get a PM from this perv?

What should I do about it?

********************

gstitz 08-14-2008, 05:58 PM I got a porno one from new user "Titanic", clearly spam.

Yes, I would love a way to report them.

kato13 08-14-2008, 11:01 PM Well two things came out of this. One I learned the new syntax for embedding images into the forum. (Spammers are a good source for information.)

The second more annoying thing I discovered is that it looks like once again the databases have been purged, we only have back to April 08 i believe. My history only goes back 32 posts. (I was looking for the old img syntax)

Those are the same 138 threads that are here. This sucks. vBulletin is not a huge resource hog. I have helped people tune vBulletin sites that get 1000s of posts a day. I think when there are issues they just purge first and think later.

if it was not for the really good people here I would totally bail on this site. I mean I hate yahoo's forum layout but they keep EVERYTHING all the way back to the beginning. They even have threading which makes keeping older post more difficult.

I'm a moderator, but my powers don't include access to the PM system, the ability to ban IPs or Emails (I can only do only UserIDs) and edit/delete posts in the couple of forums I control. Strictly speaking I'm working outside my remit if I deal with problem users outside the Story or World Design forums, though I don't mind doing it.

There is sadly, sod all that can be done about it. James the owner has removed all contact methods for him from the forum, and doesn't answer emails. Dave has Admin powers, but he got called on his bullshit over the chatrooms last month and hasnt been back since.

James was last seen active in the Onebookshelf/E-Publishers Private forum. If you can access that part of the forums, you could ask him there.

Very true

I stopped posting my stuff to the Stories forum as I'd lose work in the unannounced post purges.

I'd suggest another forum, but I can't think of another forum that has a dedicated T2K section (ours is a legacy of the old WebRPG setup). Unless you set up your own T2K place (didn't someone do that not so long ago?) and risk losing passing traffic like me - who's not a T2K player but has an interest in militaria...

...hey, where'd everyone go?

********************

Targan 08-15-2008, 03:15 AM Hey O'Borg, I think I may have said something similar before but here I go again...

You talk sense, you're friendly with all of us here and you seem to give a shit so I would be more than comfortable for you to be our moderator and have the ability to control things here that you don't currently have the ability to control. If you do happen to run into Dave or James online would you be willing to test the waters and ask if they would grant you the appropriate powers? We could have a vote here to show that we would like you to have the authority. I wouldn't want you to have an increased workload or anything, but in any case you know there is rarely any trouble around here. We keep up a healthy post count (justifying the ads posted here) and other than that we're pretty low maintenance.

What do you think?

You may have noticed that I don't have a particularly high opinion of Dave, and I'm not adverse to letting him know it

The last person who asked James the onwer if they could be an admin (Dave) has it seems now set up his own set of forums and stolen away a significant percentage of RPGHosts remaining userbase - ergo less ad revenue for James. I don't think me going cap in hand to either of them is going to do much good.

If you guys want to set up a poll and nominate a Moderator for the T2K forum, I'll be happy to gatecrash James' private forum and let him know you're requesting your own Mod and see if he'll grant someone the powers.

Becoming a mod is no big deal. Just a simple ceremony, sign your name in blood and then stand in your front doorway, hold a wiffle bat above your head and scream "By the Power of RPGHost! I, have, the Power!!" as loud as you can. It helps if there's a thunderstorm nearby and you're wearing hose, but they're not mandatory.

Nothing against you, but I've had problems with moderators acting poorly on three other sites*, so I'm not eager to see any new ones.

(* one I demanded a ban from, another I won't post to the forums anymore and the last I got a permanenet ban from for publically calling the mod a "poor moderator")

Yeah, I see what you mean, the best thing to do with any e-mails like that is to just toss them into the "bit bucket" (trash) and it's all gone. That's what I do with my regular e-mail spam as well plus those bogus ones from Nigeria.

No offence taken

I know a couple of forums where the mods are Olympic Gold Medal winning Asstards. Here, they're just so inactive it's hard to tell.

Anyway, looking at the Announcement and thread in RPGGeneral (currently third down from the spam), I think the point is moot. Looks like James is going to re-invent RPGHost. I've no idea what will happen to the forums, but given the last few old message purges were unannounced I wouldnt be surpised to turn up here one day to a 404 error.

Grimace 08-26-2008, 06:06 PM 'Tis a shame that this site might be going the way of the dodo bird. "Doom on you. Doom on you."

Not that I'm abdicating an "abandon ship" call, and while I know that Antenna has a site discussion board (albeit the last time I visited it really seemed to have dwindled to no posts), I know of another little fledgling site that's got a Twilight board on it. No takers there, other than myself, but it is an option if we want a completely fresh start in case this site does go "404" on us.

This fellow's site is at http://the-gaming-resource.com/forums/index.php?sid=4fec7e9686561fd5231cc02a3dd65b37

I've noticed over time that this Twilight board is about the only thing still routinely kicking on this site, and that says a lot about us die-hards (and the new blood).

********************

Hangfire7 08-26-2008, 06:52 PM Well you guys can return to the Yahoo t2K site, it gets pretty lonely there and I miss the ol days when we had pages of posts a day.

Targan 08-27-2008, 01:39 AM What a ridiculous situation. This forum is the third best thing to happen to me in my T2K life (the first being discovering T2K when I was in my early teens and the second being my development of Gunmaster:2000). If this forum disappeared I would really miss conversing with you guys as you have taught me so many, many things including military facts and figures and also how to better converse with other adults via the internet, among other things.

Hello,

My name is Capt. Johnson Ramon, an American soldier, I was serving in the

military of the 3rd Infantry Division in Iraq.I am in Iraq at the moment,

I and my partner moved one of the boxes containing funds which we believe

is belonging to Saddam Hussein in March 2007, the total fund in this box

is $12,000,000.00 (Twelve million US dollars), this fund had been moved

via a safe Diplomatic Courier Service to a secured security company, Click

on this link:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/2988455.stm

Basically since we are working for the American government we cannot keep

these funds, we are 3 that are involved. This means that you will take 30

percent, I will take 30 percent, and my partner will take 30 percent, 10

percent will be kept aside for expenses.

This business is confidential, and we plead that it should not be

discussed with anyone. There is no risk involved as we left this fund in

the Security company without declaring it's contents for this period of

time to make sure that the fund will be safe for transfer and investment.

If you are interested I will send you the full details, my job is to find

a good partner that we can trust and will assist us.kindly send me an

e-mail signifying your interest including your telephone/fax numbers for

quick communication and also your contact details. I assure you that this

transaction is risk free and its success is 100% guaranteed,

Please help us to help you.

Please get in touch with me.

Yours-in-service,

Capt. Johnson Ramon.

As for the nigerian scam, my favorite was a version I got some months ago claiming he was the and officer in the headquarters of 3rd Marines which happens to be my old unit, so I played along asking how the boys were doing and a few other exchanges until I got bored and just sent all replies to the spam folder. Although I did forward it to the FBI for impersonating a deceased Marine in the end.

How hard would it be to start our own forum just in case?

As has been mentioned, this forum has a habit of losing old posts.

********************

kato13 08-28-2008, 01:43 PM I could have a forum up in 24 hours on one of my home boxes if we needed one. It would be very similar to this one with a couple of pros and cons.

Pro

I would save everything and have backups ready to go if we lost any thing.

I would probably catch downtime faster than RPGhost does.

Cons

It is on my home DSL and might be slow sometimes since I only have 384kb/s out.

I am not sure I would want to let search engines in as that might slow things more.

Just another option.

For what it's worth, there is a semi-active Twilight 2000 forum over at the 2013 boards.

http://www.93gamesstudio.com/forum/

With the 2013 release coming up (still not yet announced but expected) that's where I'll be falling back to as a rally point.

A decently sized and well-behaved community has begun to coagulate there, many of which are members here too. I figure you can't go wrong there as it's managed and moderated by the guys who currently have the rights to the Twilight license. Even if you insist on not liking the new game, their 2K board for discussion of the legacy systems isn't going anywhere, and I'm sure they'd appreciate the increased traffic and exposure.

********************

Hangfire7 08-28-2008, 02:13 PM I now have the link, I'll be right over

The weirdest spam I ever got was one where a man wanted me to build him a time machine. I have an amateur radio license, radio electronics in my hobby and I like to occasionally tackle a TV or two, but unless I can turn a 1970 Zenith color TV into a time machine, I think that's a bit out of my league.

I don't know, then again, I don't believe in the "Grandfather Paradox," more like time is like an 8-Track tape (although with infinite worlds, there are really infinite tracks), from that point on where you change history, you switch to another track. It's sort of like in "It's a Wonderful Life" where George Bailey wasn't born, yet he existed in that timeline where he wasn't born. I think time travel is moving along the timeline but you can end up or even create a parallel world. Well, I'd never want to test my theory, I could be wrong but I just don't think it is simplisitic as having only one timeline, instead, you have infinite number of universes.

You might have one that is the same as our timeline completely except President Clinton named his cat "Corky" instead of "Socks." One of my favorite theories or thoughts is that when you read a book, a role playing game, etc., it's possible it exists or existed as a parallel world out there. I'd hate to be in the Twilight World.

Then again, there exists the possibility that if you surf time and slide around, you might not get home again.
