Twilight:2000. Spreading the Word
Bon dia!
In the last days of October, Vilafranca del Penedès (a Catalan town, 50km from Barcelona) celebrated its annually game convention. And there we go, to spread the “word of Twilight” and to recruit some followers. Given that the game was relatively unknown among the Catalan and Spanish public, and the important quantity of games offered, I had my own doubts about the availability of people wishing to play the game, so, following the advice from a friend with a lot of experience in gaming conventions, I prepared some flyers and let the gaming table ready with all the attractive gaming items available: the map of the Poland offensive, the individual weapons charts used by each character, our color-printed character sheets with the ready to use characters, the photos of the playing characters in each chair… And I waited to see if anybody took the bait. Surprisingly, I had five players in half an hour: a nice mixture of inexperienced players, with one veteran who served as a great help in keeping the rtyhm of the game. None of them had played Twilight:2000 before and only two of them (one currently in the military and one veteran) had hear about the it. The other three players were seventeen years old. Not surprisingly, some introduction about the Cold War was needed. The overall experience was pleasant and I ended the day with a large smile in my face. After all, I think it’s the first time I’m able to run a one-shot adventure in one afternoon. And more important, the players are wishing to repeat the experience. As a detail, a lot of adults who, I suppose, were the fathers of my youngest players, make me a lot of questions about Twilight:2000 and the game mechanics. I suspect they would have sat down to play with us if their sons would not have feel uncomfortable with the decision. For sure, not explanations about what was the Cold War would be needed with them. A pair of pictures (low quality, sorry) about the event and one of our flyers:

I think ever since that sparkly vampire movie came out, every time some hears the words "Twilight" they think of that instead of the game.

Actually I'd be curious too HQ, I remember there was a thread concerning Northern Ireland so would be interesting to see what would happen in other hotspots like Basque country etc. |

The explanation about the situation in the Iberian Penisula as depicted in the rule book of Twilight:2000 v2.2 is not very satisfactory. I prefer the situation depicted in the "Mediterranean Cruise" module. In the v2.2 background information there's not any clue regarding to Morocco, and the situation of the two Spanish autonomous cities there (Ceuta and Melilla). Any Moroccan possible aspiration to control these Spanish cities will condition the military attitude of Spain. And, in turn, this will condition tha availability of the Spanish military resources to face any independentist movement inside its own borders. Accordingly to Mediterranean Cruise, the assumption that Spain will try to remain neutral by the dates of the eruption of the Twilight war seems plausible. I think that this will be a good point to depart from. But if this neutrality would be strict enough to deny the use of Spanish bases and facilities to the NATO side could be a matter of debate. Following Mediterranean Cruise, the fact that Spanish important facilities could be targeted by nuclear strikes is entirely plausible, too, with independence of the level of neutrality of Spain, and following the politics of the last nuclear strikes to deny the use of important facilities in the neutral contries. Amid the effect of this strikes, the possibility that some of the regions with more nationalitst roots could try to became independent is plausible. But, in the case of Catalonia, the geographical situation depicted in Twilight 2000 (both in v2.2 maps and in Mediterranean Cruise) seems too exagerate, as it exceeds the current limits of our autonomous region and catalans nationalists have not any real aspiration of expansion. In any case, all is conditined by the availability of the Spanish government to retain the control of the Army and the reaction of the rest of the Spain amid the chaos caused by the nuclear strikes and their effects. Another subject that seems more plausibe in Mediterranean Cruise is the attitude of the Guardia Civil (depicted as becoming marauders in the v2.2) . Though I must recognize that some Catalans have our own prejudices about this corps (tied to their role in the past years of dictatorship), the Guardia Civil has demostrated in the last years a true vocation of public service and is hard to imagine them as a band of robbing marauders. In resume, HQ, it truly deserves a new thread. I will think about it and write some lines. Have a nice day!

This probably wont be a surprise to those who know me, but in my T2kU I have the French supplying covert support to Catalan separatists as part of a policy to keep other countries destabilised by creating pro French client states.

I agree. Even today nations carry out covert operations to support or destabilise organisations within other nations borders. The US support of the Mujahadeen in the 80's is a prime example of this.
