Default Pick your weapon?

Suppose that in a T2K, your PC and his 2 NPC did a heroic act for someone. During the mission, your team lost your vehicle and all embarked long arms. Everyone got out with just a pistol, knife or their good looks.

- Your friends, doing the best from their meager stocks, offer you a beat up (wear value 8) Toyota high lux pickup truck and 3 weapons from this cache. Each weapon comes with 4 full magazines (25 or 30 depending on common type), 12 x 8 rds clips for the garand, or 4 x 100 belts, or 2 full magazines and 2 HEDP rounds (for the M203).

- You are operating behind Pact Lines in CENTCOM AOR.

- Weapons and attached optics are as depicted in the photo.

- What weapons do you take and why?

Yeah, I always liked the look of the Thompson.

But if I am seeing the picture correctly, there is a M1 Garand in the weapons mix.

1) Durable. Went through North Africa, Italy, Western Europe, Pacific, Korea, some Vietnam. Drag it through the mud, jungle, dirt, dust, rain, snow, sleet, hail, and other types of muck, the average GI with a modicum of care can keep the beast working.

2) Stopping power. There is something about being able to hit something and that something STAYS DOWN. The 30.06, or, if you prefer, 7.62 mm, worked through WWI, WWII, Korea, into Vietnam. 'Nuff Said.

3) Availability. 30.06 has been around for a LONG time. As a lost soul from the destroyed 5th Division, you want to be able to feed the weapon you have.

Yeah, no full auto. Yeah, heavy as hell. Yeah, not very sexy looking. So what. I am trying to survive the T2K nightmare. Give me a M1. I MIGHT live through this.....

My $0.02

Mike

That might be an M14.

Yes. It is an M-14 variant of some kind.

I was looking at the fourth from the right. M14 you say? That's cool. STILL 7.62. Still what you hit STAYS DOWN. Heavier than M1. Auto fire, though, if needed. I would not be upset with M14. Now, where the hell and what the hell, am I going to trade for ammo..... Unless what we did for village/group/unit/whatever earned us ammo. Then I want to trade for food/water/med kit...

Read before you write, Mike. The first entry in this thread SAID Garand. With 12 x 8rnd clips. GIMME, GIMME, GIMME.....

Now, what do you want for some of that sausage I see over there (pointing)...

You're behind the lines, so whatever you pick you need to be mindful you've got some distance to travel with no ammo resupply and likely a fight or two getting back. That makes the ability to scrounge ammo paramount.

1) AK-47; need I say more.
2) PKM (MG 2nd from the left)
3) RPD (MG 1st on the right)
3) M/45 (the SMG 4th from left)

I'd probably go for the PKM as you can, if you have experience with it, squeeze off single shots from it so it is useful for a number of things, including hunting, albeit it is a bit heavy to haul around. But as said before, it is one of the best weapons from the selection in terms of ammo supply.

i'd take the romanian AKM
the RPD
and the swedish k

reliable weapons that could take one hell of a beating, easy to get ammo for, and even if we fail to police our brass it'd be hard to pinpoint who we are.

An AR, because I know how to use it, know it's good points and bad points, have the most experience with it, and have been taught by an armorer to do more than just clean it.

My primary grab would be the PKM as it is a Russian machinegun.

First off it would possibly confuse Warsaw pack forces as to my unit's identity. Secondly as a heavy weapon it might indicate to said Enemy forces a Platoon sized unit.

Secondly I would grab that M249 as it would make any marauders encountered think that we are part of a much larger unit. Plus it is the only weapon with an Optic sight.

Third I would take the AKM as it would be really easy to keep fed.

If there had been a suppressed weapon I would have grabbed that instead of the AKM.

Without the restrictions, an L85A2 as familiarity is probably more important than people think and that is what the bulk of my training is on.

Otherwise:

* One of the AKs - the end right looks like a shortened RPK and looks interesting
* The GPMG for firepower
* THe PK as a compromise between firepower and ammo availability

A SOG Style sawed off RPD to be exact.

The description of them makes them seem so sexy. Alas they aren't like Chopmod M60 where you can get a full range and accuracy machinegun back with just a quick barrel swap.

I would go with the M14, M240, and AR/M203. My thoughts are training as I am former US Army I have used all of them, and assumeing that my NPC are guys I have served with they would as well. The reason for the M240 over the M249 you get the same ammount of ammo for either it is longer ranged and can be used in the M14.

The Garand... knowing I have a single shot and have to make every shot count means I won't waste bullets.

You mean the M14 with the selector lever installed. So yeah it can be switched to full auto if one needs to. I just wish that it was set up as an M14E2 myself. the straight line stock, sling with a forward grip and the bipod really do help.

The first post does say "12 x 8 rds clips for the garand" but the second post show a M14, so I went with what was shown, but think you could also go with what was said, as no Garand was show.

Why do we have to pick? Can't we have them all?

I'd pick the weapon I had the most ammo for.
