PR Brigades
Anyone have any material on the status of the 193rd or the 92nd from Puerto Rico?
I saw some articles that had the 193rd moved to PR instead of getting deactivated, like that line. Depending on your thoughts on the Canal itself that is... Anything on the Army/Navy forces on PR during T2K?

Some of my groups thoughts on this area:
United States Southern Command U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command & U.S. Fourth Fleet - Stuck at NS Roosevelt Roads, PR. United States Army South - Evacuated Panama and moved to NS Roosevelt Roads, PR. Joint Task Force Bravo - Evacuated Honduras moved to NS Roosevelt Roads, PR. Joint Task Force Guantanamo (JTF-GTMO) - Evacuated Gitmo moved to NS Roosevelt Roads, PR. Joint Interagency Task Force South , U.S. Marine Corps Forces, South and Special Operations Command South - Consolidated to Naval Air Station Key West Not sure where HQ for the Command was at this timeline...so that's a gap. We are thinking this is in line with the Gitmo closing. We seem to feel the two brigades above would be stuck there along with various other assets as listed. Thoughts?

When Olefin? I am trying to find the reference to Gitmo in canon material to start a theoretical timeline here.
I think USOSUTHCOM was HQ'd in Panama with Army South so them moving to PR, the closest base in the Caribbean, makes sense to us. If the 173rd was there at the time, them moving to PR as well works...they have always been a question mark in our timeline honestly. Still trying to work out naval assets originally assigned to Roosevelt Roads/the Caribbean at the time as well as the 193rd and 92 IB's orbats.

the movement of the 173rd is basically canon as Frank Frey identified them as going to Kenya as part of his unpublished module - we know when they went there (per what Frank stated here on various threads) so I had them in my sourcebook as initially in Honduras after they were first reconstituted, then sent to Kenya from there and taking the 1st of the 228th along for the ride to provide them helo lift
Frank had part of the 228th going but not specifically the 1st if I remember correctly |

When where they reconstituted in your timeline? Sent to Kenya?
The Kenya line was always odd to me but I loved the work none the less.

The 173rd was reconstituted and sent to Kenya according to Frank Frey -
here are posts from this thread http://forum.juhlin.com/showthread.p...ighlight=lions shrike6 08-06-2004, 09:59 PM Its based off a series of posts Frank Frey left on the old Webrpg forum. Subject: The Lions of Twilight: T2K in Africa Posted by Frank Frey Date: 07/05/2000 08:07 Greetings, While going through some old T2K notes, I found a hand drawn AO map for western Kenya. I used this map in a Merc: 2000 campaign and was going to use it for a T2K campaign. Here are some of the main concepts for the T2K campaign. 1.) The main American unit in Kenya is the 173rd Airborne Brigade. It was reactivated in 1996 (oob available). It was originally tasked as CentComm's mobile reserve force but wound in Kenya protecting the oil refineries there. 2.) The Kenyan military in T2K is still a very potent force. They work with the American paratroopers in keeping things relatively orderly. 3.) The two main enemy organizations are the PARA (Pan African Revolutionary Army) a loose amalgamation of various tribal militias and warlord armies and Junudullah (Soldiers of God), a radical Muslim group that wants to establish a Islamic theocracy in East Africa. Anyway those are the basics. I didn't really get much else done. Frank Frey ******************** shrike6 08-07-2004, 05:18 PM Subject: 173rd Abn OOB for Kenya Posted by: Frank Frey Date: 07/05/2000 14:30 Greetings, As best as I can reconstruct it the, the 173rd AB deployed the following assets in Kenya. HHC 173rd Abn Bde 173rd Recon Company (Airborne)(LRRP) 173rd Intelligence Company (Airborne) 173rd Engineer TF (Airborne) 1 Bn/ 503rd Parachute Infantry 2 Bn/ 503rd Parachute Infantry 3 Bn/ 503rd Parachute Infantry (Lt. Motorized) 4 Bn/ 503rd Parachute Infantry (Airmobile) 173rd Aviation Company 173rd Artillery Battalion (Airborne)(105mm) There were units that were attached to the 173rd. IIRC, one of them was the 228th Aviation Battalion. Frank Frey xxxxxxxxxxxxxx Greetings, From my notes and such, here is the oob for the 228th Aviation Battalion such as it is. 228th Aviation Battalion HHC Company 2 x O/AH-6 Defenders A Company (Transport) 4 x UH-60 B Company (Transport) 6 x UH-1J C Company (Gunship) 3 x AH-1V When I did my sourcebook I had this in it as to their reconstitution The 173rd Airborne Brigade was reconstituted in late 1995, originally as a strategic asset for CENTCOM. It was to consist of two battalions of airborne regulars and two air mobile battalions to be provided by the National Guard and Reserves, along with support and artillery battalions. Its first deployment was to Honduras to aid them in fighting Nicaraguan and Soviet backed guerrillas in 1996. |

Ok cool, thanks for that.

actually thats one area that canon pretty much never explored - you have the events of Gateway but thats about it - and it offers almost no info beyond one battle off Grenada between the US and the Soviets

Ok if no one knows much about the forces stationed in PR during the 90's...then how about Bermuda maybe?
Even British units there would be awesome!

The US, Canadian, and British Bases are closed in the early 1990's
Canadian Forces Station Bermuda - Closed in 1992 USN Tudor Hill (Listening Post) - Closed in 1995 Naval Air Station Bermuda (Kindley Field) - Closed in 1995 HMS Malabar (Royal Navy Shore Est) - Closed 1995 The Only perment Base left is Warwick Camp which is the Bremuda Reigment main garrison One item that should be noted under the The Treaty Concerning the Permanent Neutrality and Operation of the Panama Canal. The US has the to defend the canal from any threat that might interfere with its continued neutral service to ships of all nations. So am thinking that some sort of US protection force would still be in Pamama

Nice catch Rcaf, I will have to take a look.
But would BRAC continue closing bases in the earl 90's considering the looming world war? Or close it just "delay" it... Thats were my group is leaning...Bermuda would make a nice place to stop in the cross Atlantic trade and such.

Keep in mind that all those bases closed because the Soviet threat was gone - here with the Soviet threat still very real most likely they will still be open

Agreed Olefin, hence the desire to find real world information on who/what was stationed there in the 90's.
Puerto Rico and Bermuda are key facilities to securing the coast/Caribbean.

By the early 1990s, the range of submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBM) had so increased that Soviet submarines no longer found it necessary to come within range of Bermuda-based patrol aircraft in order to strike their targets in the USA. If you looking at if the base closure would have happened, look at your time line. In V1 yes it would be open. V2 or V2.2 maybe depends if fits to what your campiagn looks like. I always found the later versions laking information and US and other NATO reactions to early key events. I figure it could go ethier way.

as an FYI - looking at the Caribbean module it mentions a gunfight between a US battleship and a Kirov class cruiser - you have to wonder if on the way into the Caribbean the Kirov could have used some of her SS-N-19 Shipwreck missiles to take out any British or US patrol aircraft based at Bermuda - otherwise you would figure they would have spotted her for sure on her way in

If you like that idea you can find material for a campaign there with the 173rd in posts by Raellus in the fanzine (an excellent article on the 173rd Airborne in Kenya) and also by myself in my East African Sourcebook as well as the notes that Frank Frey posted here and several other threads as well with input from various forum members
