MVD/KGB Units
Has anyone seen a good source for MVD and KGB divisions? Organization and designations mainly, but also equipment issues.
KGB I assume were primarily border guard units or did the KGB also field internal security units? MVD were primarily tasked with internal security, correct? I assume that any armor assigned would be of the T-72A variety and BTR-70s in 1995; not quite front line but not obsolete either. Anyone know if they used older equipment, like T-55s and BTR-60s? |

I have a KGB Border Guard orbat on my website at https://sites.google.com/site/chico2...me/pact-orbats. Send me a PM for the MVD. Here's a MVD unit history I've worked up, part of a expanded and revised v1 Soviet Vehicle Guide Jason, I and some others have been working on for many years: 104th GUARD DIVISION This pre-war unit was stationed along the BAM railroad to protect that strategic transportation route against saboteurs and Chinese infiltrators. Headquartered in Tynda at the junction of the BAM and the TSRR, the division’s mission largely evaporated following the rapid Chinese retreats of the 1995 campaign which moved the front line hundreds of kilometers to the south. At the same time, the rail lines and traffic which provided the support for the Soviet expeditionary force in China were under constant attack from Chinese partisans. The commander of the Far Eastern TVD received permission from the Ministry of the Interior to redeploy the 104th to protect the Trans-Manchurian Railroad. The division split into a western group and an eastern group, locating garrisons along the line as Soviet railroad troops regauged the line from standard gauge to the wider Soviet gauge from both the western terminus of the line at Tarskaya and from its eastern end at Ussuriyisk. The division’s troops were in nearly constant action throughout 1996 and 1997, defending bridges, defiles, rail yards and repair facilities against hundreds of Chinese guerrilla detachments. Following the collapse of Chinese resistance the threat changed to that of maintaining the line against plunder by desperate refugees and countering raids by marauders and bandits. The division protected the trains carrying the 13th and 20th Guards Armies when those formations were rushed to Europe to stabilize the deteriorating situation there in September 1997. Throughout 1998 and 1999 the division’s soldiers remained in place protecting the dwindling numbers of trains and their infrastructure that were shipping valuable resources and war booty from the occupation of China back to the war-battered USSR. In early 2000 the last diesel locomotives on the railroad stopped operating and the division used the handful of steam locomotives (brought out of reserve depot storage along the TSRR) to evacuate itself from east to west along the Trans-Manchurian to Chita, where it established security along the TSRR west towards the ruins of Ulan-Ude and rebel-held Irkutsk. It remained nominally loyal to central authorities but had not been in communication with them for some time. Subordination: Eastern Siberian MVD District Current Location: HQ in Chita, detachments to west along Trans-Siberian RR Manpower: 2500

The RDF has KGB regiments in it
KGB TRANSCAUCASUS BORDER DIST. HQ: Kirovabad, USSR 91st KGB MRR (1,400 men, 8 AFVs): Tehran 54th KGB MRR (1,200 men, 12 AFVs): Qom 74th KGB MRR (1,100 men, 11 AFVs): Esfahan 865th KGB MRR (900 men, 6 AFVs): Yazd 67th KGB MRR (1,000 men, 12 AFVs): Tabriz 29th KGB MRR (1,200 men, 18 AFVs): Shahr-e-Rey Kings Ransom has more detail on how they are equipped SOVIET 74TH KGB MOTORIZED RIFLE REGIMENT The 74th KGB MRR was formed in December of 2000 from KGB Border Guards Mobile Group 74 and several KGB Field Police companies. The 74th, like the other KGB units, gets top priority for supplies and equipment. This makes it unpopular with the Soviet Army. There have been incidents where firefights have broken out between the KGB and the Army. It should be noted here that the KGB Border Guards are of the same level and scope as the Soviet Army. Player character groups who dismiss the Border Guards as just another group of policemen could be in for a rude surprise. Numbers: There are currently 1100 men in the 74th KGB MRR. They are organized like a standard Soviet Army motorized rifle regiment. Weapons: Standard Soviet small arms and machine guns. Artillery support is provided by a battery of 120mm mortars and two self-propelled 122mm howitzers. AFVs are T-72s and T-80s; APCs are BTR-70s and BMPs. The unit uses the BRDM-3 armored car as well. |

So very much on par with a Cat A unit.

yes at least in T2K official terms - the question is does that match the reality of what they would have been - but it does give you a good baseline for creating KGB units in the game
