Default OT: How to search for rural land?

So sorta OT here...

I want to try and locate a nice 20ish acres of rural land, preferably somewhat mountainous, wooded and some pastures. Problem is, how do I find that place without driving all over the country to search for it?

The web seems like a bunch of BS, 100 acres in NM for 50K crap...

Any suggestions on strategy or how some you might have found land outside your local area?

I'd say that the first place you should look is a real estate website. You can usually input size and a few other relevant details and it should spit out a bucketload of options with photos.
That should narrow things down to the general area and you can then scan the area with something like Google Earth to find exactly what you're after.

I know that this is OT but how would you do it in a TW2k world.

Local knowledge i would guess would be the main one, but what if we are talking about the other side of the country or even another part of the world.

Remember no internet, phones etc.

It just got me wondering.

Canada is an option sure...but how do I find properties that fit my needs?

Do I randomly call 100 agents and ask them to send me information?
Do I randomly search the web hoping to find something with more then a picture of a stand of trees as a description?

Any sites people use to help with weather details or mean temperatures? Agricultural bases for areas?

What type of things should I be looking for other then the plot details?

http://www.areahub.ca/

Alberta - You want the foothills area and Lake Louise and Banff areas to start - Even Calgary...

http://www.bcrea.bc.ca/

And thats the British Columbia area one...

In Canada we have whats called Real Estate boards that cover huge areas and interact with other boards... making one contact will get you to the right person.

Thanks for the input.

Any feedback on northern GA, upstate NY, Idaho, Maine or perhaps Canada locations with good amount of hilly/mountainous terrain, forest away from large local populations?

Not a bunker no, but me and the misses want to move to a nice piece of land and look for a better quality of life for ourselves and our future family.

We are both old school and want the family systems of old time Cubans or Italians. A family owned property, true family values, perhaps even some home schooling.

Question, would you think a property in the mountains would be a absolute necessary or could a flat wooded parcel be sufficient if adding fences and hedge lines for security?

Well, if it's to be mountains, you better learn how to play the banjo!

Squealing like a piggy is a good skill to learn too!

J/K I like the idea. You really dont need mountains then. But a nice patch of woods to call your own and build a cabin in there with a nice trout stream nearby. Check out UPPER Michigan, and Maine also. BTW you arent afraid of a little snow and cold are you?
