A suggestion from real-life (I work in a pawn shop and we have a number of "ladies of the night" as regular clients)
1. All of the women have kids 2. All of them have some element of mental illness and/or addiction 3. They often have some unusual/expensive stuff for sale: jewellery, expensive tools, musical instruments, electronics, even high-end mountain bikes (It may sound odd, but we've never encountered a problem with this. So it's probably not stolen - we guess that it's a result of payment by barter) 4. It's the "ladies" who sell the stuff. Not only do the "boyfriends" want to stay away from the paperwork, they tend to be regarded as low-lfe scum. They have trouble finding ANYONE willing to make deals with them - and NOBODY will do them any favours |

@Nate: Nice work, my friend.
@Tombot: Really cool. Thanks. @Matt: That's helpful info. I've read quite a few accounts of mothers in war zones resorting to prostitution in order to feed their children. I imagine that a couple of Damian's girls had children. It might add something to have a couple little kids on board the boat. That might create more of a moral dilemna for the PCs. On a side note, I just read Rick Harrison's (from Pawn Stars) book, Licence to Pawn, and I learned that pimps wear lots of jewelry because, unlike cash, it can't be seized and forfeited, so they can give the jewelry to their girls to pawn for bail money. I figure precious metals and gems would constitute the only real, universally accepted form of currency c.2000 (and beyond), so that's what Damian tries to collect.

Seriously, the River Pimp was one of the weirdest encounters we had. It was like Apocalypse Now in Poland
