While looking at gearing my holster stuff towards T2K2.2, I discovered two notes for suitable future timelines. Both Vietnam and the Phillipines would like a U.S. presence, also the Communists are gaining support in the Diet in Japan. Perhaps a shift of Okinawan and reduction of Mainland forces and very generous SOFA agreements might occur prior to huge oil find in the Spratly Islands antebellum?

China wants the South China sea to be a Chinese lake right about now, something they will have to work on as the Phillipine navy and the Vietnamese navy are all ready entrenched there. The reason is simple, there is tons of rescources there just like there are off the those islands the Japanese, Taiwan, and the Chinese are arguing over right now. And as of right now the US Navy has little to do with those areas ever since we pulled out of the Phillipines in the 90's and have no real reason other than mutual defence treatys with the Japanese that could affect those islands. The Chinese are relative late comers to the modern naval game and depend on staked claims of control that come from as far back as the early middle ages.
