I have high hopes for this. The fact that George Miller is directing this is a very good sign. Also, the actor playing Immortan Joe is the same one who played the Toecutter in the '79 original.

I love the look of the new mad max trailer. I really want it to be super-great. But then i worry that the trailers i've seen are just one extended action scene, and maybe the movie won't have a gritty interesting story line.

I rarely go to the theater to watch movies anymore (too expensive, rude people), and hardly ever on opening night, but I'll be there this Friday- by myself, if need be- to see Fury Road.

I never go. Too inconvenient. I just wait till it comes on cable; if I really want to see it bad, I'll spring for PPV and see it within a week of its release in theaters.

Saw it 30 minutes ago... anyone who wants to see it should see it at least once on the big screen.
But it's important to remember something, this isn't a "reboot", it should be judged as another tale in the legend/myth of the Road Warrior. The tale may revolve around Max, but it's the story of Furiosa when she crossed paths with the Road Warrior.

Tom Hardy is good as Max, he brings a physicality to the role that Gibson didn't in the same way that Russel Crowe has been said to bring a physical presence to many of his movies.

And this Max has been too long on the road and too long alone, he's practically reverted to a feral state (i.e. something domestic returned to it's wild instincts).

been away from this board for awhile, but saw Fury Road earlier today. I wasn't planning on seeing it but when the boss tells the department to finish up whatever work you have by lunchtime because we're going to see Fury Road, then who am I to disagree. BTW, I am a big fan of the trilogy, as I imagine most of you are. I'm also a big fan of Charlize Theron too.

I saw it in 3D, maybe it was just me but the contrast of the desert vs any other colors was too bright. And I also thought the sound effects during the chase scenes seemed to override whatever limited dialogue there was. I liked the back story of the original movies "two great tribes went to war", "the precious juice" etc etc as well as what character development there was. There didn't seem to be much reference to what caused the fall of civilization beyond a few grunted sentences. Also there was a certain level of humor in the the previous movies (Ayatollah of rock and rolla anyone?) I didn't think there was much of that.

Lots of action, some of it over the top. You've seen the trailers.

But don't get me wrong, I actually liked Fury Road and want to see it again and will probably buy it when it comes out on bluray. oh and there were 2 or 3 homages to Road Warrior, or at least I thought they were.

How can you not like a movie that has a double necked flamethrower guitar?!?!

And you imply there wasn't any humour in this latest Max movie!

But yeah, the dialogue was sparse in places and didn't come across clearly at times largely due to background sound.
I saw it in 2D as one of the people in my gang of movie fans can't see 3D very well so she prefers 2D, so the colour wasn't an issue, (and besides, George Miller himself apparently said he prefers the 2D version of Fury Road) .

One thing to think on that may help with this movie, the first one was the establishing movie and after that they are "tales" of the Road Warrior. That is to say, we're not seeing a movie about what happened and what Max did, we're seeing a movie of the tale told about what happened.

Saw it last night and enjoyed it quite a bit. It wasn't the best Max movie (still 2 The Road Warrior, IMHO), but it certainly wasn't the worst. BDD's review pretty much nailed it, so I don't have much to add except that I thought the score was a bit overpowering. IIRC, the other Max films don't have the same volume (both meanings) of instrumental music throughout and it sometimes drowned out whatever"dialogue" was also going on at the time.

I think the film warrants repeated viewing. There was so much going on during the action scenes, I'm sure I'll pick out a lot more details watching a second, third, fourth, etc., time. It's definitely a movie I'll pick up on Blu-ray.

Yes, would agree totally, the background music was too damned loud at times and yes I will end up buying this on disc at some point.
And for those of us who enjoyed this one, Hardy has signed on to do another two (or three according to some sources) Max movies. Business being business, the other movies will be made as long as Fury Road is a financial success - personally I think it's very likely we'll get to see the second Hardy Mad Max film and if it's as enjoyable as Fury Road, then we'll get to see the third as well.

Concur 100%. I miss Mel also but I was surprised at how much I grew to like Tom Hardy as Max as the movie progressed. Once he lost the bondage mask, got his jacket back, and started kicking ass I was good to go.

SPOILERS FOLLOW:

The girl playing with the music box was an awesome homage to the Feral Kid, as was the fact that the main villain was played by the same guy that played "The Toecutter". I also think I saw Max limping in a couple of scenes a la the injury at the end of Mad Max.

I was disappointed by the lack of assless leather chaps (no gay, really!), orange mohawks, and references to "Dinki Di" dog food. I also didn't get most of the slang - it was even worse than the kids language in Beyond Thunderdome. And I hated the bizarre "little girl flashback/late 90's horror movie" close ups. I actually think it would have been better to simply show clips of Max's wife and child and the Goose being burned in the first movie rather than try to insert something from "The Ring Part 6".

But I'm nitpicking to be sure. All in all I loved it and it was much better than I expected. It was so over the top and bizarre that it was, in my opinion, an excellent retelling of the Mad Max saga and worth the very long wait.

And as Boogiedowndonovan stated, the whole guitar/drum wagon so over the top it was awesome. Saw it with one of my Army pals and every time that came one one of us would say "that's just badass!"

Well see that's the thing, it's not a retelling, remake or a reboot. It's meant as another tale in the legend of the Road Warrior.
We're meant to view these movies the same way we would view the tales of any mythological figure. Fury Road is basically part 4 of the franchise.

The article Rae linked to states the implication in its final paragraphs -- "Where must we go, we who wander this wasteland, in search of our better selves," reads the final title card of the film. It’s a quote from The First History of Man, a fictional book that exists within the Mad Max universe. It implies that humans continued on, improved and recovered to the point of writing books and chronicling their history. Max is sure to be in that history, but as a myth, not as a man.
Max is the man, the Road Warrior is the myth and what we are watching are the tales of the Road Warrior.

Apparently Miller intended Fury Road to be a 3D animated movie with the second movie to be live action. Miller mentioned Akira as an inspiration for how he wanted to approach this animated movie but at some point he decided to drop the idea for an animated movie and keep it live action.
He appears to have very well formed ideas for the franchise and seems intent on crafting the entire legend of the Road Warrior, I'm confident the next movie will be damned good as well.

And Miller has recently revealed that the next movie will be titled Mad Max: The Wasteland.

As an aside, if anyone is interested in another Aussie movie that highlights societal decay, the Guy Pearce movie The Rover can be seen as something of a lead up to the break down of society in the first Mad Max movie. I'm not saying the movies are connected or related in any way but I found it very easy to imagine the world depicted in The Rover as the beginnings of the Mad Max world.

I saw the Rover and disliked it immensely. The main character was irredeemably unlikable and I quickly found myself not giving a toss what happened to him. The only thing it had going for it, IMHO, was Pattinson's performance as a simpleton.

Fury Road, on the other hand, I might just have to go see in the theater again. Aside from a couple of the original Star Wars trilogy films (I was in grade school at the time), the only other movie I've seen twice in the theater was The Dark Knight.

Yep I agree with you on Pearce's character being very unlikable and frankly I was surprised at how well Pattinson played his role. I believe though, that the point of Pearce's character was to be thoroughly unlikable and in that he succeeded - this is what happens when people and society stop caring about each other.

I've just switched on the computer for the day and this was the first site I checked with this being the first thread I read - then I went to the Amazon site.
The comments have given me a grin that I think will last all day so I encourage everyone else who's seen Fury Road to go there and have a read. In terms of more Aussie slang (e.g. "Fang it" from the movie), "It'll put a smile on your dial".
