Well, this is interesting... Soviet map making
The Soviets apparently spent a considerable effort collecting information about various places around the world and included the information on maps they made for the military.

Very interesting; remember that the USSR would have made heavy use of Spetsnaz forces for attacks on enemy facilities in the opening days of a war, so this would be useful info to have.

I have a vague idea that this may have been mentioned before (as the article was published in 2003) but it's about Soviet map making so posting it here is still appropriate...
The article states that the Soviets made detailed maps of Sweden for use in a planned seizure (invasion) of the country as a launch point for further advances into Europe. The article is from Pravda Online so take it with due caution. However, the way the Swedes found out and the method of obtaining the maps that revealed all this in the first place is worthy of an adventure in itself! http://images.jomidav.com/Pravda_Story.html |
