Default North Carolina

So, I finally got a group together to play TMP. They want it to be set in our current location, NC. I've got some stuff written up, but if anyone has some thoughts I'd appreciate them.

I think that ECU in Greenville would make a great location for a university survivor group with an eemdee school.

That's true. I'm just sad most colleges in NC would get a pasting. There are some good schools here.

Game went well. We've got a four man team so far: A stealthy explosives expert, a doctor, a French Foreign Legionnaire, and a man who knows how to drive anything. They woke up in a bolthole outside of Mount Pleasant and immediately set off for Albermarle. General tech is 1850s level, with some outliers. They hung around town for a while, learning about local politics and surrounding nations. They learned about the Kentucky Free State, the Carolina Confederacy, and the Yadkin trade association. There next destination is Lexington so they can announce their presence and begin rebuilding.

What about the ruins of Ft Bragg and Pope airforce base?

North Carolina is home to a military base for four of the five United States armed forces branches, the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard and Marines. The bases are spread throughout the state, with each focusing on the individual needs of its specific servicemen and women.
Seymour Johnson Air Force Base

The Seymour Johnson Air Force Base (seymourjohnson.af.mil), in Goldsboro, North Carolina, is considered a major Air Combat Command base and is home to the 4th Striker Wing, which consists of four separate groups, the maintenance group, the medical group, the mission support group and the operations group. The base is also the home location of the Air Force's 567th Red Horse squadron and the 916th Air Refueling Reserve Unit.
Fort Bragg

Fort Bragg (bragg.army.mil) is the Army's only base in North Carolina. Fort Bragg is located near Fayetteville and home to more than 30 different military organizations, including the XVIII Airborne Corps, the 82nd Airborne Division, the 4th brigade JROTC and the Army's Reserve Command. The John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School is also located at Fort Bragg. The center serves as a training center for the Army's Civil Affairs, Military Information Support and Special Forces special operations programs.
Base Support Unit Elizabeth City

The Coast Guard's Base Support Unit Elizabeth City (uscg.mil) in Elizabeth City is the Coast Guard's sole base in the state. The Coast Guard's Aviation Logistics Center and the Aviation Technical Training Center are both located at the base. Base Support Unit, Elizabeth City, is also home to a Small Boat Station that patrols local waterways and an Air Station that sends units along the Atlantic Coast, from Greenland to the southern Caribbean.
Camp Lejeune

Camp Lejeune (lejeune.usmc.mil), a Marine Corps base in Jacksonville, home to several combat units and support commands, is known as the home of "Expeditionary Forces in Readiness." In addition to hosting its own Marine Corps commands, Camp Lejeune is also the site of a Naval command and hospital. Three Military Operations in Urban Terrain training facilities are located on the base, an area with a broad range of support services and facilities for military members and their families living on base or nearby.

Steel mills give something large and industrial that would be vital in the recovery of the five year plan..... Most are probably rubble and junk now. The surviving steel workers are five generations dead and lost to history.

The prisons though! There is a great source for aggressive and dangerous NPC groups. Most of those along with the families of the incarcerated are far from primary and secondary targets.... only the plagues and vigilantism are a threat to them. Five generations later one or two prison gangs has come to dominance in the surrounding area.

Default Colleges in NC

Randy mentioned ECU in his post. There are several others to consider.

University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill

North Carolina State University in Raleigh

Duke in Durham

Wake Forrest in Winston Salem

There are also a multitude of branches of these schools, smaller colleges, community colleges, tech schools, etc.

Any of these can be used as a base for an adventure. A surviving library is always a good idea. Maybe a small medical facility that is still operating. The module Ruins of Chicago is a good resource for a college scenario.

Default Natural Resources in NC

There are several regions of NC. Each has a unique set of resources that can and should be investigated.

Eastern NC

There is fishing, hunting, farming, pine woods and sand.

Middle NC

Hunting, (I understand there are a multitude of white deer in the rural areas), Farming, Shale based Natural Gas, (I understand that in NC alone, the Shale formations could produce enough natural gas to power the entire USA for 100-150 years)

Western NC

Granite, Marble, some coal, some iron ore

Any or all of this can be used as needed in a game.

Thanks guys. Some of this is good, I just need some plot hooks. How do you guys RP the rebuilding phase of the Project? I don't want them to just fight bad guys forever.

Default Personal Resources in NC

This is a little speculative, but maybe some of these groups survived The Day and have continued their specialties.

Society for Creative Anachronism. Knowledge of medieval weaponry, armor building and potentially other, less technologically advanced types of weapons-making.

Various Civil War Re-enactor groups. Including at least one with working artillery. They all have working black powder weapons.

Various Revolutionary War Re-enactors. Again, knowledge of black powder weapons.

Many varied church groups. You can define the skills that are present.

Many women have skills in growing vegetables, canning & preserving, spinning, weaving, knitting, and garment sewing.

Plot hooks are as varied as can be.

Your team comes upon a village that has illness.
Your team comes upon a village under attack from "others"
You find a library that is somewhat intact.
You find a military group that has survived intact. May be even a "President".
You find a village that needs help with agriculture.
You find evidence of other Morrow teams.
You find evidence of steam technology.
You find evidence of intact telegraph lines.

Use these as you see fit.

If you go to Lexington...

Some things to look into...

Davidson College
Diebold (Electronic and Physical security, safes and vaults. This indicates high strength steel and the tools to work steel with.)
Roehrig Engineering (Automotive and mechanical engineering)
Interstate 85
Four US highways, 29,52,70,64

How far out of 1850s technology are they?

I take three paths of technological advancement such as metallurgical advancements, chemical syntheses, and medical inoculations. I present the PC's with the present level, usually low, of each one. For instance, the community can make steel using a Bessemer furnace but have not developed the open hearth furnace. The doctor in the group could exam an older person and see the pox marks on the face of middle aged adult from a small pox epidemic years ago. The doc then leads the team to find an out break of cow pox to develop an inoculation for the community to protect them from the next small pox outbreak.

Electricity is important to advance beyond the 19th century tech levels.

I include agriculture in my mix. You have to have enough food to feed your entire community before you can think about advancements in tech level. Yes, a talented smith might have just developed the steel plow. But with out a food surplus to feed him/her and the other workers at the smithy, the plow never gets built in enough quantity to help the others in the village.

Just a thought.
What dang near ruined the first Virginia colonies was lack of food, and lack of knowledge of what was around them.
Make sure you cover hunting and foraging skills.
Cannibalism is never a good choice.

So, bp weapons, muzzle and breech loading. "Military" weapons are 1866 winchester esque, no actual military in the region, just part time militias. They jury-rig what they can, but farmers go without tractors outside of certain high tech city-states and electricity is little used outside of windmill power run to radios and simple machines. So you'd have a town out of the 1850s only they have solar panels powering their radios, which are tube sets made in Asheville, now the Biltmore Republic, which controls much of the mountains.

If the Biltmore Republic has the ability to produce tube radios, early 20th century tech, while much of the piedmont and coastal regions are stuck with 1850's tech then the problem is not technical but political.

Where in NC?

I grew up here and have a fair working knowledge...why go in the direction of Davidson County? Charlotte is close, could you appropriate things from there?

The Yadkin/Pee-Dee River has become a huge trade route after the war due to the degeneration of the roads and rails. They are going to lexington as it's one of the larger towns on the river and is the meeting place of a council made of all the trade towns on the river. In addition, charlotte was nuked.
