Default What's in your pocket?

weswood 06-29-2008, 07:59 PM Just for laughs I'm making up a party of NPCs, and I'm having trouble fleshing out thier gear. Everything is starting to look the same.

The party so far consist of a Ranger SSgt, been in the Army since he got out of high school, a infantry Sgt, south Alabama hillbilly hunter/fisher/ one hell of a rifle shot, and a Cpl medic, a drafted concientous objector from LA, California.

The things I tend to carry, or used to anyway: extra coffee (the SSgt has 1/2 kg), means to heat it (sterno/canteen cup), sharp pocket knife & small whetstone, sometimes a multi tool, zippo lighter & flints (I used to refuel it in jeep tanks) plenty of ciggarettes, some parachute or similar cord, and a small flashlight.

The SSgt has a M92 pistol & a Remington 870, the Sgt has an M16A2, and the Cpl refuses to carry a weapon. I'll probably add either a grenadier (M203) or a machinegunner, maybe both.

Back to the original question, what do you carry (aside from the normal clothes/underwear/socks, sleeping bag type stuff)??? They're starting to look the same, gear wise.

weswood 06-29-2008, 08:12 PM Whoops, forgot the duct tape.

pmulcahy 06-29-2008, 08:24 PM I'm in my underwear right now -- no pockets at the moment!

Sorry for the long post. I literally have hundreds more. I have been working on this project so long I just wanted to throw something out there to get the feeling that this will be useful to someone.

If you want more let me know.

********************

weswood 06-29-2008, 09:59 PM You had me worried, I started reading the list and thought you carried all that in your pack/pockets. But thanks, very useful.

********************

kato13 06-29-2008, 10:27 PM No problem. LOL on my not explaining. I edited my post to avoid further confusion.

Your situation is one of the primary reasons I am making this database.

My hope is that eventually you could generate random equipment for a person, vehicle or location. I still have not figured out exactly how to do this but it will be a fun project nonetheless.

Hangfire7 06-30-2008, 04:14 AM In my pocket right now is simply a tissue for when I sneeze. I am in my bed clothers at the moment and unlike Paul, mine do have pockets

As for PCsand NPCs pocket gear, I have always found it interesting to be creative, add things that are simply, common but also unique to that character so that it adds to the realness and flavor of the said PC.

Items I have personaly carried in my pockets when I was in, or when I was afield:

550 cord, usualy a few different sized lengths, usualy scraps left over from tyying down poncho shelters or tent stakes. For the record, I never bought any 550 cord I just picked up the short lengths from others.

Pocket knives of assorted varieties, from a gerber single blade mini pocket knife to a german army knife with four blades I bought on the USS Belleauwood, how it got there I have no clue.

The occassional fixed blade knife, I carried a Gerber gaurdian boot knife for the longest time.

Minimag flashlight, AWSOME in the day!

AA batteries, worth their weight in gold! Often wrapped in a ziplock baggie to keep them dry. And then wrapped in an AAFES of Navy Exchange plastic shopping bag for further protection.

Bottle of Tobasco Sauce or other hot sauce pilfered from the chow hall.

Camo compact! Screw the issue tubes of camo paint that was to hard to put on and never went on well anyhow. And the camo compact you had a mirror for field shaving too.

Plastic soap dish of shaving gear, travel toothbruth, mini tube of toothpaste, disposable razor and mini soap bar.

Cigarettes in plastic cigarette box

Cigarette lighter or two.

Tin or two of dipping tobacco

Empty MRE tobasco bottle filled with water used as a level for laying in guns.

Full MRE tobasco bottles or salt or instant coffee packs or crackers or cookie or charms or carmel packs or tootsie roll or crackers.

C-Ration parts same as above.

Stipper clips or guide, they are all over the place when you don't need them but you can never find one when you need them. Only when I washed my uniform did I find four stripper clip guides and hald a dozen clips.

Com wire, used for making field antenas as well as tying things up, used it once to tie my SAW sling on when it melted through the sling.

1 pijnt pilots flask, <I had water in it, didn't want to carry a canteen like boot camp and we were required to have a water bottle, it fit nicely in my pocket without a bulge or bouncing around>

Lucky charm necklace, lucky charm necklace that was cool me and my bros all bought together, lucky charm brazelet same as aboce.

Generic PX pain reliver or/and cold tablets

Metal Spoon liberated from Ship or Base galley prior to going to the field.

because you are tired of loosing or breaking MRE spoons or they aren't long enough.

Weapons cleaning gear, issue and civilian purchase

Tape, Electrical or Duct

Crevate from 1st Aid Kit, also worn as a scarf or a bandana around the neck.

Gloves often in pocket

Heat Tabs <several>

Bug Juice insect repellant

Plastic Bagies, shopping, ziplock or small trashbags <3 gallon sized or so> for water proofing gear

Wallet

Eye glasses and case

Spare Alice Clip

Greande Pins <when the Lt is hot to toss that smoker grenade but realised its the wrong time and place and he already tossed the pin it comes in handy>

P-38 or P-51 can opener, works great for when you bring those mini cans of chili or dinty moore to the field and even better when you raid the Armys or 7th Marines chow tent taking pans of T-Ration pudding.

Pens and Pencils, notepads, letter writting gear, letter to be sent, letters from home, stamps, I even carried a pocket book of crossword puzzles which helped kill the time, nothing like laying against your pack in an LZ waiting for the helos to come in and you ask "whats a four letter word for route that starts with P"

Regular papperbacks, some titles, Last of the Mohicans, Rumor of War, Hunt for Red October, Cardinal of the Kremlin, Tunnes of Chu Chi are just some of the titles I have carried.

Personal Binoculars <I carried them and I know of one other who carried their own in my entire time in.>

Strobe Light

Map <wrapped in plastic>

Transistor Radio

Walkman and tapes

mini Picture Albuim with pictures

Metal Mirror <for shaving>

Small backpackers stove <a freind in the 82nd carried one and a TOW pogue>

Canteen Stove some of our 31s carried these.

Aimpoint site

Spare magazines

Boot Laces

Sunglasses

Baby powder

Wool Watchcap

Wool glove liners

Boonie Hat

Fieldjacket liner

Those are some of the things one can find in their pockets on operations, often it depends on the enviorment and mission of course. And also what is available. Alot of times it was pogey bait, but in a T2K world that would be long gone.

But you will notice that the majority of the items have to do with comfort be it food, keeping dry or warm or comfortable in some other way with a few items having other uses. And thus is the mindset of the guys in the field, its all about comfort, getting it, or mainaining it as best you are able. Or at least mitgating your misery.

MajorPo 07-01-2008, 04:18 AM Have you thought about throwing in a few items, maybe way down near the bottom of the backpack that would add a little freak out or curiosity value for any PC's that might try rummaging through. Maybe a worn and almost threadbare head from a teddy bear, a mummified finger, or a large black latex butt-plug. Set your imagination free...

********************

Targan 07-01-2008, 04:20 AM MajorPo, you know there are some incredibly dodgy things in the backpacks of PCs and NPCs under the command of your character in our campaign. Tech Sgt Latoya Martinez has a large dildo in hers and Sgt Che Jesus Cortez has some extremely dodgy porn mags in his, for example.

********************

Hangfire7 07-01-2008, 08:26 AM Actualy in the field I made it a point to have a phone card and change. Just in case the only method of com was a phone booth, ala Grenada. <Which stuck in the back of my head and thus I kept those items.> Also, hey if the phones of your area are working why not sneak a call home, or if you happen upon a soda machine then why not? Which we would do on occassion on field ops and patrols in Japan, sneak into the vil in the middle of the night and hit the soda machine for a cold one Or, should you be persued by local waifs toss a handful of change to distract them as you disapear.

When my reserve unit got called up for Desert Storm, we had to be at the Center at 0400, so I just went straight from the bar to the Training Center. A lady friend at the bar gave me a teddy bear for luck. We never made it farther than Camp Pendleton, but man did my GySgt give me a wierd look when i unpacked my seabag.

********************

pmulcahy 07-02-2008, 06:34 AM I got brass in pocket...never mind.

Anyway, when I went to the field, and even when we went off to Desert Shield, I always had as many paperback books as I could put into my stuff. Even for a day on the range I had one book in one of my cargo pockets. Books help me relax, and in those few times I had to just do nothing (amazing how few those come along as you go up in rank!) I would often read. My books would go into those gallon-sized Ziplock bags, except for the one in my cargo pocket, which would go into a smaller one.

Also, most troops have something to play music, and what tunes they could carry in their stuff.

********************

Poor Merchant 07-02-2008, 10:38 AM I've just scanned the lists above but nobody seems to have mentioned condoms - useful not just for the obvious purpose, but also for popping over the barrel of your rifle to keep some dirt out of it, carrying small amounts of water in an emergency in the field and lots of other stuff too.

And Silly String to detect tripwires, tampons to temporarily plug bullet wounds, and Krazy Glue to close cuts and slashes.

********************

Rainbow Six 07-16-2008, 03:26 PM I always had a character (usually the group leader) carry the dog tags of the fallen...

(I didn't see this one posted...apologies if it was and I missed it)

********************

newyorkronin 07-16-2008, 10:51 PM I defer to the characters in the film "Predator"

Blane: Chewing tobacco (during helo insertion)

Billy: Pendant and huge bowie knife (on bridge, confronting Predator)

Hawkins: Archie comic book (during helo-insertion)

Poncho: Grappling hook (climbing to helicopter wreckage)

Mac: Disposable razor and flask of booze

Dillon: Handfull of captured intel docs (after raid on guerrilla camp)

Dutch: Cigar and Zippo lighter (in beginning of movie, chilling out in helicopter)
