Interestingly, I've seen one different opinion. George MacDonald Fraser, a British infantryman in Burma, related in his memoir
Quartered safe out here. He thought that if he had posed the option to his squadmates, "Another campaign for us, or hundreds of thousands of enemy civilians dead?" they would have grumbled and complained, but made the effort. Now, that's 50 years later, and his opinion projected onto others, but there it is.
