Default OT: Covert-81: 1980s spy RP game

In Europe and America
there’s a growing feeling of hysteria
conditioned to respond to all the threats
from the rhetorical speeches of the Soviets...

Sting, “Russians", 1984

Greetings Reader. Shall we play a game?

Fancy testing your skills in the high stakes field of international espionage? Can you break into a heavily guarded submarine pen? Bluff your way through a border post with a defector hidden under your back seat? Carry off a mullet?

Well I might just have the sim for you. Covert-81, a thrilling globe-trotting adventure set during the height of the Cold War in the early 1980s.

Joining one of two covert operations units on either side of the Iron Curtain, you'll tackle dangerous assignments for your chosen side. You will need all your skills to survive...

So who will you align with? Section 91, the CIA task force dedicated to preserving democracy? Or advance the Bolshevik cause with Chameleon?

****
This will be a sim in the style of and very much inspired by 1980s spy fiction, such as Airwolf, MacGyver, the early Tom Clancy novels and James Bond, with the hindsight acquired with over 25 years worth of declassification on both sides of the former Iron Curtain.

My plan is, depending on the number of players, to have two teams, acting in operations against each other, and also against opposing GMs, who will take the role of NPCs on each side of the Cold War.

I would take on the role of ‘Warsaw Pact GM’, giving orders to Chameleon and playing the opposition to Section 91 in their missions. Ironette (another player) would be the ‘NATO GM’, giving missions to those players and trying to capture - or kill - those who work for the Soviet bloc.

For those of you wondering which end of the spy fiction spectrum we’ll be on, it will be the grittier end - think For Your Eyes Only or Airwolf. There will be lethal violence and moral compromises, but also a bit of humour along the way. Remember, also, this is a world without commercially available sat nav, cell phones and Instagram, where you can still literally telegraph your jokes.

This is a world of death, destruction, lies, glamour and international travel. This is Covert-81.
