Post Apocalypse Books
The Last Ship (from 1988 - not the TV show) was a pretty great book about a destroyer alone, post nuke exchange, looking for a safe port. IIRC (I read it in high school) it deals with command and loss, with the US and Europe basically completely uninhabitable.
On The Beach also has a significant plot centered around an American sub that is looking for signs of life.
