Mentions Bill Maudlin, fond memory I have a first edition of "Up Front" and still look in on it from time to time it is ageless ( unlike me)

The only piece of equipment he should have taken and didn't was a Casio compass watch. Cheap and indestructible, they are the best budget "backup compass" you could want. The Suntours aren't accurate enough and the 511 Watches are too expensive to risk losing or damaging. I would have taken one of those $15 water purification straws too (just in case).
