I'm a housedad, so I don't get paid in money. I have started doing some editing for a friend's tech-writing company, so I'm nearly a paid writer.

I used to be a clerk in the city library (2 terms if I were a 2nd ed. character), and before that a manger trainee for a shoe store.

I'm a professional asshole. I disconnect people's electricity when they don't pay the bill. I also connect/disconnect when customers move.

I spent 12 years repairing TVs, videos, etc. Then I did a degree and now I work in IT, doing all sorts of stuff - some coding, some support, some sysadmin work. Whatever needs done, really.

Somebody's got to do it. If there were no consequences for not paying bills, who would pay bills?

I personally think it takes considerable courage to go back to school after being out for a long time. Bravo!

Professional I can deal with--it's the rank overachieving amateurs that cause most of the problems.

If you do that, have someone take your picture in it, while standing next to several 21-year olds, and post it here!

Well, I posted for a Lineman Helper position this morning. Hard, dangerous work, but at the end of a 3 year apprentice program, about $35 an hour. Wish me luck.

Recently retarded.. I mean retired (that does mean getting tired again doesn't it). I will soon be drawing SS and doing a job as Buddy sitter for my brother-in-law that had a massive stroke a couple years ago. I left one of the largest retail auto parts companies where I was a parts sales manager (not what I really enjoyed, other than interactions with people.. at least SOME of them). Been a biller for a home health agency, driver manager for a HAZMAT trucking company (my FAVORITE job of all and would have been my retirement job had there not been illness in the family causing a move back to Texas), farmer, mechanic, construction worker, warehouse MHE supervisor, soldier for nearly 12 years... and numerous 'odd jobs'.. what ever it takes to pay the bills.

I have a feeling that public rage will compel the [expletive deleted] American politicians to choose between fining BP to within an inch of their fiscal lives or being voted out of office. I'm interested in seeing which horn of the dilemma our snake oil salesmen will choose. The profitable environmental work in the near future is going to be upgrading spill management and remediation plans for Big Oil, the chemical industry, and everyone else who deal in large quantities of liquid hazmat. I've toyed with the idea of ditching grad school and teaching for a couple of years to try to find work with some environmental consultants. My CHMM's as good as it ever was.

On a different note, I was strongly thinking of joining the Coast Guard Reserve as an environmental type. If I had, I'd be in the Gulf of Mexico right now.

I hate to say it, and it may be the severely cynical side I have, but I think that everything that our politicians are doing right now "against" BP is for show only. In reality, they won't bite the hand that feeds them as much as big oil does. Voter apathy and the lack of an informed electorate (and the lack of an attention span people in this country have) along with the disinformation and on-air lying that money buys, will ensure that most of them will remain in office. Look at Bobby Jindal, Governor of Louisiana -- he's simultaneously criticizing Obama for not doing enough about the spill and demanding that the holds on the drilling leases off of Louisiana be lifted.

That states two major industries are fishing and Oil. Hes just trying to save one of them. Since the one is pretty much hosed right now.

yeah seriously, nothing ever changes except the american public gets dumber and dumber, addicted to mind numbing reality TV shows, "celebrities" who have done nothing but look good, etc.

Back on topic,

like what weswood said, I am a professional asshole. I work in the legal department for a large ISP. I mediate disputes, shut off email, websites and credit card processing for people who don't like to read or follow our TOS.

thinking about going back to school for an MBA though.

I'm a law student until the end of the month, when I graduate. After that, I'll be doing whatever job pays me the most or can further my goal of eventually joining the police (whenever they start recruiting again, which at the moment looks like it will be some time away). At the moment I'm honestly considering doing another Afghanistan tour to help squirrel some money away, but we'll see.

Law student...that'll be the second one we lose to the legal profession...

Just kidding -- good luck.

Cheers Paul! To be honest, I've never wanted to become a lawyer of any kind, the closest I want to get is (hopefully) joining the police. Unfortunately, none of the British police forces are recruiting at present, due to not having any money. So yeah, Afghanistan again, perhaps.

Does the British Army have something equivalent to JAG in the US?

All the services have their own legal department. But I've got to be honest, I'm young and stupid enough to prefer being in the field. I could always go down that route later in life.

Delivery driver for auto parts to our commercial customers and various mom and pop garages. With the downturn in the economy, people are keeping their jalopies which makes business very good right now.

I hear that! It helps that I don't drive very far when I drive -- almost everything's close. My 5-year-old minivan has a bit less than 20,000 miles on it.

Also, I know people that can help me maintain my own vehicle, it is a 1994 Ford "Exploder." I'm going to get help in fixing my right, rear rocker panel, a common place for rust on the Explorers. I also have other issues too, the 20% discount on parts is a good thing for me.
