Default 6.5 Grendel and 6.8 SPC

Twilight2000V3 07-06-2005, 10:37 AM Having just gotten interested in teh 6.5 Grendel.. I was thinking about introducing it into the T2K world in a future setting (like running a Twilight:2010 game).... any thoughts?

Basically the 6.5 Grendel is a better 7.62mmx39 round. It uses a bullet weight of between 90g and 144 gr. with velocities equal to that or more than a 7.62mmN. Great bullet desing. And all you haave to do to shoot it out of an AR is different mag, bolt and barrel. Uses 6.5mm (.264) bullets and you can ever resize 7.62mmx39 cases (all but steel).

pmulcahy 07-06-2005, 01:13 PM M-4-based weapons firing 6.8mm SPC or 6.5mm Grendel (as well as some others in the 6-7mm range) are already being considered to supplement the 5.56mm round. I've heard rumors that the Army is also considering modifying the M-249 to fire the 6.8mm SPC or 6.5mm Grendel.

The problem with the 6.5mm Grendel, from a supply standpoint, is that the round does not fit into standard M-16/AR-15-type magazines, while the 6.8mm SPC does (with the exception of the 100-round C-Mag). In addition, the 6.5mm Grendel will not fit into the feed system or chamber of the M-249 without a lot of modification; the 6.8mm SPC will do so with only a minimum of modifications, which can be done by unit armorers. The 6.5mm Grendel will not work with the M-249's belt links, while the 6.8mm SPC will.

The reason for this is that the 6.8mm SPC is basically a necked-out 5.56mm, with some other modifications, while the 6.5mm Grendel is a completely new round with a very long neck and steep shoulder angle. It's easy enough to make a new upper for an M-16/AR-15/M-4-type weapon, but modifying a SAW to fire the Grendel is quite a hurdle. You might be better off designing a new weapon.

But you are right, both are better, both in damaging potential, penetration, and range than the 5.56mm. (I can't really account for the extra damage most of the time in Twilight 2000 terms, because it's fractional in game terms, but it's there.) So you have a good idea to introduce it into your game.

Twilight2000V3 07-07-2005, 11:09 AM Hey Paul from what I read the 6.8 uses similar mags but you cannot used M-16 mags.... the article could be wrong though. It said something about the ribs in the M-16 mags cause jamming?

Nothign a little trimming on the receiver wouldnt take care of and a new barrel! LOL. As far as belts go... that is minor if ya think about it and for T2010 you could easily design an M-249E3 or M-250 SAW LOL. LOL it is fiction LOL.

On a isde note... tis good to be back on teh boards... been away for a whiel and good to see the old gang still on here.

pmulcahy 07-07-2005, 11:24 AM You can actually use M-16 magazines -- but the lips have to be bent at a different angle, the follower (I think that's what that part on top of the empty magazine with the dummy "bullet" is called) has to be changed, and the spring has to be changed. And a standard 30-round 5.56mm magazine will hold only 28 6.8mm SPC rounds -- and that's supposedly a tight fit.

And it's good to see you again!
