Default Chain Gun Strykers and AGS Redux

Looks like there's some discussion of up-gunning the infantry Strykers and resurrecting the AGS (again):

Kinda half expected the AGS to make the news soon. After Olefin said the airborne came looking at them.

It looks like the Army is starting to set the stage for 2016. There is a high likelihood that whoever runs for POTUS will incorporate something about rebuilding the armed forces. They are lining up their ducks.

I know they still havent put the tarps back on them and that they were run thru the wringer for several days.

However won't be able to get any more intel on the AGS as I was let go this week. Was a lot of fun working on those vehicles the last five years but apparently its time to move on to new challenges.

Shame to hear about that Olefin - but thanks for the heads up.

Bringing back the M8AGS is a cheap and quick way to get a light tank into service: so not really surprised to hear about it getting attention. I am surprised that they are looking at a 30mm though: there are RWS type turrets that do mount a 25mm Bushmaster, would have thought that would have been what they was playing with.

Ouch. Sympathy, dude. I got hit with that a year ago and got a warning on it again last month.

Some of those same turrets will mount a 30mm Bushmaster II or 35mm Bushmaster III.

sorry to hear the news Olefin, I'm in a similar circumstance, just got the word my dept is being outsourced December 1.

I liked your insight about the AGS, I wonder if they will develop the 120mm armed hybrid AGS technology demonstrator. Now that would be interesting.

Buy LAHAT from the Israelis, license build it here, slap an M- production number on it and couple it with a 120mm armed AGS and presto we have the vehicle the Sheridan should have been...!

Sorry to hear that Olefin, hope something comes your way soon.

The 120mm AGS won't be developed as it was only a proof of concept. They wanted to demonstrate that a cannon that size could function on a light armored vehicle. All the lessons learned from that went into the CV90120.

Besides, with the MGS being fielded the 105mm round is back in Army service. There is no need to match the cannon to the Abrams for ammo compatibility/logistics reasons. All the AGS needs is to be fitted with BFT/digital comms and you have a finished product. Cheap and ready to go. While I am a fan of the 120mm, the 105 still has sufficient punch.

Greatest thing since sliced bread in the world of AFV's.

Lets face it, these are the versions that have entered production, or at least a low volume production prototypes:

IFV (40mm)
IFV (35mm)
IFV (30mm)
Lt. Tank (105mm)
Lt. Tank (120mm)
SPAAG
SP Mortar Carrier (And you gotta check out the AMOS system....)
Command Post
ARV
FIST-V
APC

And most of those models have different versions with different armour loadouts.

They did engineering prototypes of the following:

ATGM Carrier
155mm SPG

You can pretty much kit out an entire division out of nothing but CV90 Variants.
