Famous last words

******************** Poor Merchant 05-29-2008, 04:15 PM I liked the Saki quote - it reminded me of the superstition about never lighting three cigarettes with the same match (although in England these days it's getting harder to find three people lighting up at the same time). ******************** boogiedowndonovan 05-29-2008, 06:27 PM The best quote is from Gen. John Sedgwick (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Sedgwick) They couldn't hit an elephant at this dist. . . . right before a Confederate sniper got him. speaking of last words, anyone out there hear about the convict Dallas Cowboys fan who's last words were 'How about them Cowboys'? ******************** |

Not in combat, but Oscar Wilde reportedly said, "Either that wallpaper goes, or I do."

Not last words, but an 18th century French Marshal (de Saxe, IIRC?) died at age 70+, after having been visited in his country chalet by a troop of actresses. The cause of death was recorded as, "an excess of joy."
Last words not recorded, but I'm sure he was smiling....

As a result, George Clemenceau declared that "Felix Faure returned to nothingness". That is of course, the official one. At the time, it was said that he died from a blowjob (untrue/unverified). Another saying about Felix Faure by Clemenceau is very hard to translate: "Il voulu être César, il ne fut que Pompée" (He wanted to be caesar, he was only pumped". Then, his mistress (Marguerite Steinhell) was nicknamed the "funeral pump". By the way that shouldn't be the Marshal de Saxe (that one died at 54, from a mortal wound resulting from a duel).
