Default Navies in T2K

I'll start this thread with the soviet navy. I made what I think is a fairly accurate OOB of the soviet navy at the beginning of the Twilight War. It is made primarly for my timeline of course but should work fine for canon timelines (just look at the comments at the bottom of the Russian ship list). Of course, ships are not overwhelmy important to the game but that might help disturb what PCs might take for granted.

A last comment. If surface ships names are fairly accurate, submarines are not and you better refer to the hull number (except for Akulas and Oscars).

Now sink them as you please.

* Ships that IRL had been cancelled, never laid down or postpone for financial reasons.
** Unable to identify the MPK number of these 2 ships as well as there true location, I put them in the CAS just because it pleases me.
NB: Many ships had been scrapped after the Soviet Union ultimately fell in 1991. Others were kept in storage and several are currently being commissioned again or undergo refit.
1) The Aircraft Carrier “Novorossiysk” should be found in the Pacific Fleet but in my game it was transferred to China (under the name Mao Zedong) prior to the conflict.
2) The Udaloy and Veduchy are in Caracas when the war begins and are officially transferred to the Venezuelan navy. Keeping their Russian crews, they remain inactive until the Mexican Conflict. The Zadorny is her transferred to Cuba.
3) The Helicopter Carrier “Leningrad” could still be there but I account it as scrapped as IRL.
4) If you use v2.0 you can forget about the Ulyanovsk. Varyag is in the North Fleet and it is replaced by the Novorossiysk. Leningrad can still be part of the BLS. You can also add: 1 Kanin-class destroyer, 1 Kotlin-class destroyer, 1 Kynda-class cruiser, 2 Sverdlov-class cruisers, only part of the Mirka-class, 1 Nanuchka-class in the BLS (Burya). You also have to reintegrate the Ukrainian ships.
5) If you use v1.0 you can forget about the Ulyanovsk (may be replaced by the Varyag) and you need to take out a number of the ships that were never commissioned. In addition, you can add a number of ships: Leningrad, 2 Kynda-class cruisers, 5 Kanin-class destroyers, 2 Kildin-class destroyers, as much as 18 Mirka-class frigates, 1 Nanuchka-class in the BLS (Burya). You can also choose not to scrap all the Sverdlov-class cruiser (at least you need to add 2 or 3). Kotlin-class destroyers are up for debate (some might be preserved but most are scrapped). You also have to reintegrate the Ukrainian ships.
6) Petya-class and Osa-class (In my game all remaining Osa-I were scrapped after the destruction of 12 Iraqi Osa-I in 1991, the Osa-II were modified; do as you please) deployment is entirely due to hazard and as no solid ground behind it. 175 Osa-I and 114 Osa-II had been built for the Soviets alone. A few Riga-class may have been put back in service but they are rare (a handful at most). However, they are to be found in Bulgarian and Chinese service. Shershen-class Patrol Torpedo Boat are not found any more in soviet service but again, a handful might be put back into service. However, they are to be found in service abroad.
7) Several types (Grisha, Kashin…) have been built in different batches with slight differences. For reason of convenience, I didn’t take that into account.
8) It is doubtful that the Dergach-class is ever commissioned if you use either v1.0 or v2.2
9) Tarantul-classes found in the North Fleet are my make up but the hull numbers are from true Tatantuls.
10) Unable to locate and identify 15 Turya-class, I counted them as Border Guard ships.
11) The raiders are only present in the Atlantic after the great battle opposing the North Fleet to NATO off the coast of Norway.
12) Polnochny-class LST had been much more numerous but in my game they have been transferred to Russia’s allies and the remaining ones were completed by hovercrafts. At some point, more than 80 Polnochny had been used by the soviet navy.
13) 3 Delta-class SSBN remain unaccounted for. I consider them discarded for whatever reason. If you play v1.0 you can add about 15 Yankee-class SSBN and 3 Hotel-class SSBN. Whether you play v1.0 or v2.2, add the K-141 “Kursk and 28 Echo-class SSGN. You can also add 23 Victor I/II-class SSN (However these ships have become unreliable at best by 1993 and they are lights in the dark to the US navy). November-class are still around in the early 1990’s but they were all decommissioned by 1990 and left in poor condition. I consider them to be beyond salvage. More Foxtrot may be available, however.
14) The Borey-class SSBN and the two SSN with no hull number should be taken out for canon timelines.

It's not simply a matter of sinking ships. A naval vessel with an inoperable power plant is as unavailable on the high seas as a naval vessel resting on the bottom. There are many factors that can keep a ship from being operable in 2000 besides just being sunk by enemy action.

It's not even that hard -- wreck the screws or rudders in deep water and repairs are VERY difficult. Do that to a sub or wreck the bow planes, and there's a good chance that the situation is terminal.

Default The Soviet icebreaker fleet

This a small addition but an important ones. Here are the soviet icebreaker I could identify. In addition, it will help you correct one of the worse mistake ever made in one of the original books: "Boomer". I love that one and I like the idea of the Typhoon-class "Barrikada". Howeve, the "Arktika" is a shame. They have used the general look of the USCG 180' Seagoing Buoy Tenders to come up with a ship which is not even an icebreaker. The "Arkitka" is one of the soviet giant nuclear icebreaker. Of course that ship might have been sunk and her name given to another one (no problem but not to a USCG ship).

So I provide here 3 pictures of ship that can be used:
- Civilian Nikitich (perfect)
- Ivan Solusin (If you want to be more tricky)
- The Arktika (if you want to have a big ship and lot of trouble for your Pcs)

Then, here is the Soviet Arctic Fleet:

- NS “Arktika” (Arktika-class, nuclear icebreaker)
- NS “Ural”
- NS “Yamal”
- NS “Rossiya”
- NS “Sovietskij” Soyuz
- NS “Taymyr” (Taymir-class, nuclear icebreaker)
- NS “Vaygach”
- “Ermak” (Ermak-class, large icebreaker)
- “Krasin”
- “Admiral Makarov”
- “Mudjug” (Mudjug-class, large icebreaker)
- “Dixon”
- “Magadan”
- “Kapitan Dranitsyn” (Kapitan Dranitsyn-class, large icebreaker)
- “Kapitan Khlebnikov”
- “Kapitan Nikolaev” (Kapitan Nikolaev-class, large icebreaker)
- “Kapitan Sorokin”
- 5 Civilian Nikitich-class
- 6 Kapitan Checkin-class
- 8 Kapitan Evdokimov-class
- 8 Ivan Susanin-class (Patrol Icebreaker, twin 76mm gun and 2 30mm gun)
- 12 Nikitich-class (Patrol Icebreaker, twin 57mm gun and twin 23mm gun)

Default US Navy

Unlike the Soviets, US are using the Task Force system and therefore a same ship might have several assignments along her career. In addition, a ship can be part of fleet and sent on an entirely different theater of operation. As a result, this list is mainly indicative and ships have been distributed to fleets in relation to what appear as their main homeport or assignment (eventually according to their last assignment). And of course, a US navy ship can be assigned to any fleet as needed.

Unlike the Soviets who suspended ship building after the beginning of the war (as in WW2), US continue to produce ships until intercontinental nukes start to fall.

* Commissioned after 1996.
** Commissioned between 2001 and 2003.
1) Surviving Gearing-class destroyer had all been decommissioned by mid-1980’s. The two found in the 4th fleet survived to the 1990’s and, with changes in world situation, they undergone slow refit (using parts from a third one and held from previously scrapped ones). Work was slow, however, and they were not available for service at the beginning of the war. Later, they were commissioned again to the reestablished 4th Fleet.
2) Forrest Sherman-class destroyers had undergone refit prior to the war. Most were available for second line duties such as escorts when it started. However, some are scrapped to provide spare parts for the others (DD-932, DD-944, DD-945, DD-947). In addition, due to the commissioning of new ships several have their names changed.
3) CVT-16 Lexington was IRL decommissioned in 1991. In fact, it was commissioned again as training carrier in 1992 and underwent refit in 1996-1997, replacing the original machinery by a less fuel-consuming ones. When the US 4th Fleet was reactivated, it was the only carrier available. She operated A-7 Corsair II, A-4 Skyhawk and S-3 Viking.
4) Entirely made-up, the 4th US fleet was only reactivated in 2008 (IRL)
5) The CG-11 “Oregon City” was previously known as Chicago. Taken out of reserve in 1989 and stripped of all equipments. Her scrapping was cancelled in late 1991. Refit was, then, started in 1992 but was cancelled in 1993 due to excessive costs. The ship was decommissioned for the second time and proposed for scrapping. As the citizens of Oregon City collected founds for her refit, work resume in 1997 and she will be commissioned again in 2001 with entirely new equipments, becoming the first cruiser in the US 4th Fleet. She will be lost to SS-N-3 operated from trucks as she was cruising off the Cuban coast.
6) Garcia-class Frigate were decommissioned in the late 1980’s and sold. Some were, then, returned by Pakistan to the USA around mid-1990’s and instead of being scrapped, they underwent refit and were put in reserve. The very similar Brooke-class followed suit. For others, scrapping was simply cancelled. The two Bronstein are also available if you play v1.0 or v2.2.
7) After decommission, several were transferred to allies or sold. If you use v1.0 or v2.2, they must be reintegrated in US fleets.
8) Except for the one in Australian, Spanish and Taiwanese hands, all OH Perry outside US are in the US Fleet if you play v1.0 or v2.2.
9) The single Newport-class sold to Morocco is available if you play v1.0 or v2.2. A few older LSTs were commissioned again; they are classified as Parish-type as there are two distinct classes among them. Several other landing ships (among them, the Thomaston) were commissioned again prior to the conflict.
10) Asheville-class gunboats that had been used by civil agencies were taken back into service after 1997.
11) A few Skipjack-class (SSN-588, SSN-592), many Permit-class (SSN-594, 595, 596, 604, 605, 606, 607) and James Madison (SSBN-631, 635, 636) as well as most Ethan Allen-class (SSBN-608, 609, 610, 618) and Lafayette-class (SSBN-616, 619, 620, 622, 623, 625, 626) were scrapped before the change of policy. All Permit-class, Lafayette-class, James Madison-class and SSBN-609 are around if you play v1.0 or v2.2. This is also true for removed Sturgeon-classes (SSN-651, 664, 665, 685).
12) Seawolf-class are unavailable under v1.0 and v2.2.

I considered that any French ship out of commission by 1988-1990 has been definitely taken out of the fleet before the war.

* Commissioned after 1996.
** Commissioned between 2001 and 2003 or cancelled.
1) Most Aggressive-class were decommissioned before the 1991 events and left aside at Brest and Toulon. They were commissioned again in the mid-1990’s along with the few that were still in active service. 5 more came from the Belgian navy.
2) “Charles de Gaulle” homeport is Toulon (IRL). However, at the Time of the Twilight War, the Fleet at Brest was the most important one and this explains that.
3) “Jeanne d’Arc” homeport is Brest (IRL) but because of the conflict she was transferred to the Indian Ocean, her homeport becoming Djibouti.
4) With the war, France withdrew from its Pacific Islands and concentrates on New Caledonia. As a result, the Nouméa Flotilla includes several ships that were located at Papeete (Polynesia): 1 Frigate, 1 LST and 3 PR-72.
5) The PH-75 project was cancelled but this was done only in 1991. Then with war coming, France could have reactivated that project. My personal version has a ramp at the end of the deck and carries 12 harriers (licensed produced in France). Also, the realization of this project would have put a serious strain on France.
6) French SSN all have their homeport at Toulon. However, because of the war, several have been relocated elsewhere. In addition, the two cancelled units have finally been built.
7) F-794 and F-796 homeport is normally Toulon while the F-784’s homeport is Brest. The F-749 should be in the Pacific.
8) The given Patrol Crafts are not of the right type. They types given are the most similar I could find and they are used for convenience.
9) 7 Tripartite are taken over from Belgium and sent to the DOM/TOM. The Wielingen-class, for her part, is sent to Brest.

1) All Hamburg class is located at Wilhelmschaven while Lütjens are at Kiel. However, as the Hamburg-class was made especially for the Baltic I switched homeport.
2) IRL F-216 is named Schleswig-Holstein, F-217 is Bayern and F-220 is Hamburg. As the Hamburg-class remains in service I had to change that.
3) A sole remaining Tarantul was maintained operational as lead ship for the Rostock Flotilla.

1) I made up the number of Naval Ranger. If one of our Norwegian friend (HQ??) can help me and provide more accurate numbers I will hold him eternal recognition.
2) Sleipner-class is similar to the US Asheville and the Sauda-class is similar to the US Adjudant.

Good job, Mohoender.

I asked our navy liaison to try to get me the list of Spanish navy active ships in that era. I'll let you know if he finds it, so you don't have to work too hard

Anything to verify the elments I have is good. I already have a partial listing on the Spanish navy. Of course, you often have to make a choice between sources.

1) IRL there are only 16 Archer-class Patrol Crafts.
2) Peacock-class remained in service and an additional 5 were built for Ireland and the Philippines.
3) Attacker-class is similar to Archer-class.
4) IRL, only two Castle-classes were built, in T2K the six ships planned are commissioned. They are similar to the Island-class but faster
5) The Fishery Protection Squadron was greatly expended, protecting fishing and oil in the North Sea while sending patrol ship where needed.
6) Despite their age, several Leander-classes were maintained into action. IRL, in the Royal Navy, they had all been decommissioned by 1995. However, I chose to sell these that were effectively sold (F12, F16, F47, F57, F69, F70, F72, F104 and F127). If you play v1.0 or v2.2 they must be available.
7) If you play v1.0, you can add several more Oberon-class. The two Valiant-classes are unavailable because of engine problems discovered in the early 1990’s. The Swiftsure is scrapped for a similar reason.
8) Upholder-class is not decommissioned. However, 4 more are built for the Canadian Navy.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know if certain Canadian ships are crewed by French Canadian crew and others are crewed by English speaking crews?

Or are all ships crewed by a mix of French and English speakers?

What I'm wondering is whether certain ships would have been likely to declare for the Quebec Government after it splits from the Canadian Federal Government?

I think the three possibilities existed but it has to be confirmed by the Canadians. I didn't pay attention to this that much but as I was going through each ship history, I have the feeling there was something writen about this. One of the ship I listed was, I believe, noted as being the first bilingual ship in the Canadian fleet.

That what was true for Belgium, however. I think that the Belgian ships were essentially flemish speaking (after all, the sea coast is in flanders) but land units were devided among french speaking units and flemish units.

That was done for reasons of convenience. I don't know if its true but the Union had a multilingual brigade at Bull Run. The commanding officers are supposed to have been faced with tremendous problems to relay orders (might be legendary but the idea is fun). In addition, that will be a problem with units in T2K. Can anyone confirm or invalidate that one?

Both.

Ships can be designated as English, French, or Bilingual. Note regardless of a designation - all of the officers would be bilingual (or at least having taken the required training to be bilingual).

If a unit is designated English or French, I also believe a portion (20%) will still be of the other language.

Its not a serious handicap as you might think. Even on board say a French vessel, emergency situations would be conducted in English for the safety of the English speakers.

I have my doubts as to a ship defecting en masse. Some crew sure, but not the ship. It would be over simplifying the French IMO.

Default Canadian Navy Post

Nice work Mohoender, but you missed some stuff on the Canadian navy post.

1) The Orca-Class patrol vessels were constructed between November 2004 and November 2008. Prior to that Canadian used the Yard Auxiliary, General (YAG) Vessels. Which are:
CFAV Grizzly (YAG 306)
CFAV Cougar (YAG 308)
CFAV Otter (YAG 312)
CFAV Caribou (YAG 314)
CFAV Badger (YAG 319)
CFAV Lynx (YAG 320)
CFAV Pelican (YAG 4)
CFAV Gemini (YAG 650)
CFAV Pegasus (YAG 651)
CFAV Albatross (YAG 660)
CFAV Blackduck (YAG 661)

2) Canada Navy purchased the four Upholders as replacements for their old Oberons in 1998, because the British had put them in storage. I doubt this would be case in Twilight 2000.

3) Kingston-Class Coastal Defence Vessel were built and launched from the mid-to late-1990s, which means using the V1 or V2 timeline, the last three boats, could not be built due to insufficient resources in the aftermath of the nuclear attack. Here is a list the way I see it.
Built 1995 between 1997
HMCS Kingston (MM 700)
HMCS Glace Bay (MM 701)
HMCS Nanaimo (MM 702)
HMCS Edmonton (MM 703)
HMCS Shawinigan (MM 704)

Rushed into Service 1997 between 1998
HMCS Whitehorse (MM 705)
HMCS Yellowknife (MM 706)
HMCS Goose Bay (MM 707)
HMCS Moncton (MM 708)

Planned but not constructed
HMCS Saskatoon (MM 709)
HMCS Brandon (MM 710)
HMCS Summerside (MM 711)

4) The entire Iroquois class underwent major retrofits as a part of the Tribal Class Update and Modernization Project (TRUMP) in the early 1990s. These refits had the effect of re-purposing the ships for area air defence; following TRUMP the Iroquois-Class were referred to as air defence destroyers.

5) By the mid-1990s the St. Laurent, and Mackenzie ships were schedule to be decommissioned and scraped; most require an extensive refit for active service, with the only ship that would not; being the HMCS Fraser; St. Laurent-Class Destroyer Helicopter Escort; because it was used as a testbed in the 1980s for technologies used on the Halifax-Class frigate.

6) In the early 1980s a emergency re-armament plan was devised; in case of a conventional war with the Soviet Union and/or the Warsaw Pact; to convert the Restigouche class destroyers into guided-missile destroyers (DDG). This plan was used during the 1st Gulf War, when the HMCS Terra Nova became the first ever guided-missile destroyer ever to serve in the Canadian Navy.

7) The six remaining Bay-Class minesweepers were re-classed as patrol escorts in 1972 and provided ship handling experience for junior officers with Maritime Forces Pacific.
HMCS Thunder (MCB 153)
HMCS Fundy (MCB 159)
HMCS Chignecto (MCB 160)
HMCS Cowichan (MCB 162)
HMCS Chaleur (MCB 164)
HMCS Miramichi (MCB 163)

8) The HMCS Fortune; a Bay-Class minesweeper; was decommissioned in 1969 and sold into mercantile service. She was refitted as the charter yacht MV Edgewater Fortune and would mostly like be conscripted into services in 1998 or 1999.

9) The Anticosti-Class minesweepers are: HMCS Anticosti (MSA 110) and HMCS Moresby (MSA 112)

10) Missing Ships, here is a list of the Ships that are missing from the list.
HMCS Cormorant (ASL 20); Cormorant-Class Diving Support Vessel

CFAV Stikine (YTP 613); Sechelt-Class Torpedo and Sound Ranging Vessels
CFAV Sooke (YDT 612); Sooke-Class Yard Diving Tender
CFAV Sechelt (YDT 610); Sooke-Class Yard Diving Tender
HMCS Protecteur (AOR 509); Protecteur-Class Auxiliary Oiler Replenishment
HMCS Preserver (AOR 510); Protecteur-Class Auxiliary Oiler Replenishment
HMCS Provider (AOR 508); Provider-Class Auxiliary Oiler Replenishment

Thanks for that one. I effectively missed it. I'll change it.

True and I didn't miss it. However, due to the risk of war and the restarting cold war, I simply considered that the Canadian navy chose to keep their Oberon (may be in reserve). UK keeps it's Upholder but simply builds four more for the Canadian navy.

I didn't miss that one too but my own timeline put the beginning of the war in 2000 (this explains that). I forgot to put a comment for v1.0 and v2.2. You vision is perfectly good except that the program could be accelerated.

I noticed but I was leasy.

I didn't miss that too. I simply considered that they effecitvely underwent extended refit while they were scrapped or sold IRL. A war is coming, every ship is needed and you do with what you have.

Didn't miss that too. I used this for all the Restigouche.

I noticed that too, they are simply turned back to what they were. Again you do with what you have. However, it is only a point of view.

Actually they are not missing really but you are right. I simply chose to list only combat ships, leaving support vessels to the imagination and knowledge of every one.

Thanks for you contribution anyway, I'll change a few things right now.

She was decommissioned in 1989, but I always rule in my own T2K games the the CGC Northwind was saved from the scrapyard and placed on display in Wilmington NC next to the USS North Carolina museum ship. As a result, both of these vessels are refitted and are available for duty when the war breaks out.

Fair. Several ship I listed were in the process of being scrapped or decomissioned between 1989-1992. I considered that the change in world situation gave them a second chance.
