Default Real Life Situations

Reading what your were saying all on cooperative writing and the like I decided to put this post on IRL weird experiences that I have witnessed, heard of... These might not seem relevant to T2K but they have often inspired me when designing a game session. Of course, I rely a lot on fiction but true life situation are a good source also. Make you think how that can evolved in a T2K world.

I'll start with Portugal with the area where my mother used to live for 20 years.
- When she arrived there, the poorest family in the next village was living in an open cave, being fed by the other villagers (1986). Situation ended in 1987.
- The old local doctor was visiting his patients on horseback until 1995, with two winchesters on the side. That ended in 1995 when he shot one of his employees: the guy had killed is favored horse. During the trial the doctor defence was the following: I owned that guy, I had the right to make justice. He was still alive in 2004, and turned the prison into his own realm, developping a library and several study program for the convicts.
- I was there on vacation during summer time. Suddenly, someone rushed into my room telling me not to go out. One of the employee's father was shooting at us from the hill top. His daughter was pregnant and he wanted her to have an abortion after a 4 month pregnancy (that would have been done with help from the local catholic church). After, several gun shots and when he got clearly outnumbered (20 men had gone out with guns) the father finally left.
- Another year we saw the custom agents (unarmed) rushing into our place with their car. It had taken about 80 bullets hit when they tried to intercept an illegal wine load. Not fleeing at all, the truck turned around and chased the agents for 10 miles. They left (the truck) when my cousin started to fire at them with a submachinegun. Next, day, about twenty custom agents, fully armed this time were searching the area.
- In the next village, a guy raped a girl; he was found hanged at a tree (not sure about that one but like it).
- During a fight, one of my mum's employee assaulted another guy in a bar and bited off his nose (he was really proud of this).
- One of my step father employee was handicaped. Two guys made fun of him. A few years later, one of the guy showed up again. The handicaped one went to take a gun and shot the other one on the spot.
- A guy there had his villa defended by two Bofors L/60 40mm in working order (I don't konw if it is still the case today).
- Last time I was there (2004) an "IRS agent" was driven out of the local wine business with a handgun put on his head.

I'll continue with France.
- While working in one of the wine area I had to cancel a business meeting. The guy had killed one of his neighbour during a hunting party. I asked if they were friend. In fact they were bitter ennemies. As civilized Europeans (over barbaric Americans) we have little gunfights but quite a few hunting accidents.
- One of the truck driver I was working with arrived one day with gun shots in his windshield. Last year, one of my neighbour complaining too much about hunters had a similar experience.
- A few years ago, two gendarmes investigating a farmer too closely got shot down (again we are civilized, we seldom shoot at tourists).
- Another of my clients was having an affair with his neighbour wife. When his neighbour showed up to complain he shot him. She divorced and married him. That guy's brother was living with three women.
- 1995, I was living (for a year) in the worst quarter of Paris. I witnessed numerous fight between jews and muslims (extremist from both sides). A boy was burnt alive outside of his college. Gangs were fighting among each other on a weekly bases. A guy was bitten to death on the sidewalk and my own street was controlled by a biker gang involved in drug and arm traffics. Jews and muslim issue rose again a few month ago (2008). The authorities answer was that it never happened before; that area had always been quite. lol.
- Recently, one of our famed actor (friend with our president) saw his property invaded by independentist Corsicans. The local chief of police was fired as a result. Since, that actor was invited to leave the island where he is not welcomed anymore. Expect is villa to be blown up soon.

I stop here. These are several real facts that can be used to build up atmosphere in T2K games. Most had happened in the 1990's they would be less realistic (may be) today. But I haven't been working with so many people for the last ten years. I like these as I'm a regular person with fairly quite life.

lol?

Nothing like that or anything remotely crazy happened to me or anyone I know (Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria) growing up.

Then again three years ago me and some friends driving through Serbia to go yachting in Greece were held at gunpoint but thats Serbia.

Funny thing about the hunting accident. Here in Czech Republic its VERY difficult to own a gun. Most people to get one (like the few that do own one) have to join a hunter's club so they usually get some hunting rifle.

But out of EVERYONE here I know I think maybe 1 person owns a gun.

At least one gun per person in the US of A, at least in my realm of friends, is pretty damned standard...and 1 per person is pretty under par if you ask me.

One per person? That's just not right. A person should have a bare minimum of three- rifle, shotgun, & pistol.

Actually I should make this clearer, before 1989 it was very VERY hard to own a gun. sometimes soon after that they made it where anyone could own a gun but the permits were very hard to get. Then a few years ago (5 or so) they loosened the permit rights for some (mainly hunting rifles and some pistols).

Understand that very well Krejcik. This is always about circumstances. Most people will tell you that they are living quite lives. Mostly, it is true but when you dig a bit you often find that something interesting has happened to them, they just don't consider it that way.

In these cases, these happen in the countryside and countrysides are always tougher than cities (and more quiet in the same time). Moreover, the more remote the area, the tougher the people. At the time, you needed a 4 hours drive to go from Porto city to the place (80 miles). Today you need only 2 hours and these things happen less often. On the down side, people are smoking crack and using heroin.

As I said, I have only been a witness in some of these (not an actor and I wasn't a kid unless you consider yourself a kid when you are 25) but I found a few to be interesting. The good portuguese doctor with his horse and winchesters has become a favored NPC in some of my games (circumstances change him a bit from time to time, then). I forgot, as you might have noticed most stories are about Portugal but this is due to the fact that this country was the theater of the last major revolution in Western Europe (1974). It involved socialist soldiers with the revolution taken over by communists with a counter revolution by the socialists again (1975). That leaves its mark for some times.

Keep asking around you, especially the older, you might be surprised

Sorry, I have to interject,

Krej, I couldn't help but laugh when you said,

"But, that's Serbia."

Mo, I honestly thought the guy who had the Boffors are a front yard onrament was just cool!

And me, thinking how to get an old reporduction cannon for my front yard would be too much. Now where did I put that catalogue for Dixie Gun works Although I could also go for a mortar for pure lostalga purposes mind you

As for wierd stuff for me? Hmmm, a wrong turn in the backwoods in Orego got me facing some "Good Ol Boys" in a beat up pick up, long beards and just overalls, but that was more of a Deliverance Situation than a T2K.

Or my honeymoon when we went to the Grand Canyon and the wife took a wrong turn. She thought a dry riverbed was the road. An oil pan and 30 mile hike later through the wild area of the Desert, although we did find a cool old cabin that used to be a small ranch.

Or, hanging out at an old coastal artillery batter when I was a kid. In high school we would sneak into the fort that was abandoned and explore the undergound galleries and bunkers. Same with the adjacent abandoned missile silo and command center <it was the command center for all of the other Nike Missile instillations for S. Cal> compltete with above ground support facilities.

As for other stuff. Eh, just the regular military stuff, being almost blown up, patrolling and following people/places and things, hiding out and observing, calling in artillery, living in a hole for a year, living on MRE no water, no bathing no sleep, half rations for months and stuff like that which is really rather boring and routine. Oh, this is twilightish, living and operating in full MOPP gear for prolonged periods.

And this was always cool, operating in small groups, teams and squads doing small unit operations. But also working with units and personel of other countries and the inevitable trade that goes on be it uniform items, peices of kit, knives, rations or cigarettes.

Jest

I always found Deliverance to be a good inspiration for T2K but never ran into that kind of situation.

I would have loved to explore bunkers but these had all been cleaned out when I was a kid. I feel envy when my mother explains me that she was playing with MG-34, Mausers and the like. Why are authorities always caring about security, overseeing fun.

Don't show this to my kids.

Well, there were caves when we were stationed in Okinawa where such things were found, usualy ones that had been sealed durring the war and would be opened buy a landslide, however, they smelled of fire and death and most items inside were ruined, really an unpleasant place to be.

But, yes I totaly agree with you and I think that is why I got into archeology. I was thinking of that as my major in college, however, as cool and interesting as it is, its not something you can really live on.

But I have maintained my interest in it still. One thing I still do although not as much as of late is ghost towns and abanonded mines, old camps from the days of the gold rushes, logging in the moutnains, and settlers as they moved west. As well as the other link, abandoned places. Like the coastal artillery post. They turned one portion into a museum, and left the others to their fate, the museum one is Ft. MacArthur, google is. But, those are just some of the things in this city, there were three or four Nike Zuess missile batteries in the Los Angeles area in addition to the command center and batter, and a few others up the coast and in the hills, as well as Orange County. But, there were also other places that had been avbandoned, a cave below the Marineland water park, that was filled with the debriss of a pier that had been destroyed durring a storm in the 20s and it all washed into this cave. The odd shipwreck, which when I started diving got me into wreck diving.

Localy in Riverside, they have an old aquaduct litteral behind my back fence from when they used to have an orange groves here. There is an abandoned facility of some sort in the field down the road, then an abandoned airstrip and shooting club from the 1930s when hollywood types would fly out here to go to the shoot club. Further the Santa Anna River is my backyard, it used to be a trail, but now they paced it into a bike way that goes almost from the mountains to the sea, and there are a few bridges that colapsed 50 or so years ago, but their pilings and foundations are still there.

And then in the hills where I go hiking again we have old cabins, a lodge ansd their debris, all or most especialy the ones higher up are more ruins than anything. Some would say fire, but having seen them durring winter, its more likely snow that caused the roof to colapse. But, it is cool to explore into their basements, you never know what you find.

As I said however, I am more partial to the ghosttowns, mining and timber camps and facilities.

I would say the same about History (unless you become a teacher). That is not my case and that's why I chose to become a ghost writer and a biographer. Writing for others (actually with them would be closer to the truth) while retaining a strong interest in history.

I'm not that good in archeology but i cannot travel without stopping at history sites (kind of love medieval castles) and talking with people around. Hopefully, my wife is sharing that interest and we often get lost on the roads. Taking days to get back home when hours will do is not unknown from us.

Yes, my initial degee was focused on History as well, and I would assume most people here are big into the study of history as well. Thus we often can disgress into discussions as to historical events that go on.

Some ideas from your post which are interesting and I can see the basis for campaigns or characters.

The Dr, who rode with the guns. I could see that happening in the T2K world. Where a Dr, or a Judge or a local Sheriff all would ride via horseback or carriage around a county or group of towns and villages, much like the old time circuit judge did which is where we in the US get the term Circuit Court.

If someone needs routine medical treatment, then they wait and this time of monnth the Dr will be in town, or if you need him now you must got to this town, or send a runner fo him there.

Someone is pending a criminal charge, well the Sheriff will be here next week and look into it. Or the local constable will just lock the offender up until the Judge arrives and a trial can be held.

Even teachers, the children are assigned homework and then it is checked weekly when the teacher arrives, then you get your new lessen and the teacher moves on to the next community.

Just some ideas for communities that are semi organized.

The thing about the teacher you mentioned makes me think about the Australian system -were isolated farms etc have vets, docs, teachers etc check in over the CB radio every week or some such .

About the doctor on horseback - I find it interesting to say the kleast that he was still living with a feudal mentality in the 1990s.."I owned that guy so it was only fair that I did justice.."

The dismemberment of law will undoubtedly lead to feudalism or as we call it in our campaign -"neo-feudalism"..in my humble opinion of course.

As for real life scenarios to inspire - an island ,semi isolated , outside the south coast were we used to live is very religious. When some hippies move dout there to live on the farm in the early 1980s ,the stern men of the congregation couldnt take the lifestyle .People with little clothes on ,children runing around nekkid etc )
When the family was in town to resupply ,the house mysteriously and inexplicably burned to the ground .The family left teh island .

(there is a bridge now,and and sort of a "green line" between the religious and the ordinary folk there now..I guess you could say that its normalizing-or stewing slowly and ripening for civil war.A prospect many of the small conflicts of everyday society would lead to in T2k world..).

I used to do School of the Air (where you talk to your teacher over two way radio) when I was in primary school and living on an otherwise uninhabited island off Western Australia's Pilbara coast. My teacher was 1000km away in Meekathara.

BTW, burning down a family's house because they have an unconventional lifestyle? What the hell happened to "Love Thy Neighbour"? Too bad hippies are peaceful folk - personally I'd seek retribution for that one. Hard core fanatical Christians are bad news IMO.

As for me I would love to move to the country side ,live on a cozy and easily defendable farmstead and let my beard and hair grow along side my crops and goats-but I would of course bring all my firearms hehe

School of the air -thats the one .Always were fascinated by Australia -it is a continent and country for one and of cours ethat blond chick in Skippy has something to do with it...

Skippy..Skippy..Skippy the bushkangoroo...
Skippy..Skippy ..Skippy A friend ever true..

Had a fellow member of the local colleges Vet club tell me a story of finding a Japanese rifle pit in a gully that had two bodies in it. IIRC they were partying when one of the guys went to "purge" some beer and found it.

Well, a story about the war between male and females just fits in here I belive.

Tricked 40 babes to search my home in another part of suburb I live in with help of the companies that is sited in the area under 4 months. I dunno I am not handsome, I am not rich, my friends think I tell lame funny stories, I weight 270ibs, my last girlfriend said I was a really good kisser but nothing more. So the last thing cannot be the truth why so many babes hunt me... I must have commited a crime to the nation of womens or something, at least NOW I have when tricking out so many babes in the wrong hood.

How about a funny "we hated that orificer anyway" story?

In Korea, there is a big problem with US units on field problems and exercises with "slicky boy." That's the slang for civilian thieves/scroungers that sneak into unit positions at night and steal stuff like rations, packs, toilet paper, fuel (perhaps not fuel anymore since we now use JP-8) -- pretty much anything not nailed down (with the exception they they know better than to even touch weapons or steal whole vehicles). Slicky boys are good at what they do -- in a T2K context, they'd be great recruits for intelligence gathering. They are also usually armed, generally with straight razors or kitchen knives.

We had this Major everyone hated. He was setting up his tent in the dark, and he kept trying to get help, but everyone was "too busy." A slicky boy came running through the camp, chased by a couple of the MPs. The Major tried to stop him, and got a slash (that merely sliced his LBE) in return. The Major then stepped back -- and fell on his own tent, snapping the center poles.

An hour later, as we were all quietly laughing at him in the DTAC, and he had located some more poles for his tent, he went to sleep. The next morning, he had human crap on his face. Sometimes, a Korean farmer will simply have to go, and squat right there. Sometime that night, the major rolled over, right into some Korean farmer's offerings. It had been frozen, but his body heat melted it in the night.

Tell you a story where I overcome a whole factory departments hatred towards me with the help of a simple door. It started way long before my extra work for the finals at a mining company. I had been promsied a office so I could do work. after 4½ months of hell of my 7 months I finally get my office. And I finally get to work and write my work to finish of my course in reality. But the bad thing was I had to have my office door open to the controlroom, so a trick in the bag was to do "the scotty" to talk to the computer and ask for it to compute and work for me without touching any keys or mouse (did the work home at my home for the moment). The workers got really affraid, then when I asked "Do you still hear me computer, do you cope with that last request..." and I start to use keyboard and mouse to work as normal I felt how tense the atmosphere amongs the workers was. Then when I just started to get a feel for more tension I said "Oki computer esper-link up, I need eighteen layers of dimension on the processor." Then workers freaked and one got into my office asking "What are you doing?" I answered in a trance "I wooooooork!". And he turns around running out of my office where the door is open saying "He says what he does!!!" That was enough for me, I shouted towards the computer "WHO THE HELL WAS THAT !" And then turns with fury in my eyes towards the controlroom. It is so freaking silent so you can hear a rat fart in a 5 miles radius. Slowly I get up from my chair asking again "Who the hell was that!". "Was it you!" I point towards the most noiciest of the workers. He just says "no". "SO WHO THE HELL WAS IT!" noone answers and I take a good look on them all (I know who it was.) And then I look on the guilty one, an 350ibs worker who tries diet. And I start talking to him with topics that interupts his diet. Then I get back to my officechair and start to appoulogize the computer for beeing rude and not following rules and seem to have a really tense moment like you really fucked up a relationship with a your dearest thing (the aldy or kids). And suddenly get an explanation from the computer that it wasn't your fault but the workers. And then just SLAMS the door to the office... It takes the boss 7 seconds to get out of his office and he shouts "WHO THE HELL WAS THAT!" I just smiles. I hear thru the door one of the workers starting to explain all that bull with talking with computers etc and after 5 minutes the boss gets into my office without knocking on the door. I sit catatonically there and tries to explain that the computer is dead. The boss starts to say "Talk to the computer again." "It doesn't matter"; I say "she is dead, my wonderful thought disapeered." "You can reconstruct your thought." the boss says. "No not this thought." I say. And then angrilly turns to the boss and saying "You didn't knock on the door, so you just fuck off!"
Policy next in the controlroom is all must knock on office doors when entering.
Then it is 2 o'clock, my smoketime so I get out of my office SLAMS the door and a worker asks "Where are you going?" I just say; "To fuck your wife in the arse!" and take a 15 minutes long smokeing brake and 3 cigarettes, I ask myself where the hell can I find a decent job where I calmly can do a proper job without questions what I had for dinner last night and jokes from the boss on what food I might prefeer or not. So I go in towards the office/controlroom area and there they sit the workers who hasn't moved for 2 hours from their chairs. And the same question arises "Where haev you been?" The answer was "She was firm and nice to me !" and then when I get into my office I SLAMS the door again. The boss is out of his office and shouts teach that spoiled brat how to shut a door. The boss from hell he was and I gonna brake him I thought. One of the workers knocks on the door and tries to harass me into fury. I just take him by the neck and lead him out of MY office with the words "If you have any good to say, then spit it out else keep your hands from my office, you fuck." SLAM.
5 minutes later there is a small knock and the same guy who had no eerand before is back, I gonna teach you how to close the door. So we get out of the office and practice how to shut the door from the OUTSIDE of the office. I get back to my office with a SLAM. 5 minutes later i have an urge of getting to the factory area and gets out silently and say "See I can close the door..." and silently close the door. I go out in the factory for 10 minutes and then get back to the office/controlroom area and into my office witha SLAM.
Next up is meeting with boss I get into the room carefully closes the door, he explains that shuting doors like that is not company policy. "Fuck your wife in the weekend it will be nice for you!" Then I get out of his office with a SLAM in the door. So this keeps up the office for 3 days with me SLAMing the door from one side but not the other. Then the whole office has a meeting with me and the boss will call the police, I say "Yeah why not so they can hear my theory of murder you are cooking on!" The boss just does a big GULP. "But you can hear a little bit of my theory of reversed mill operation instead." And when I expalined some of that new area of knowledge the boss just begs of haveing it that I give it to him. Of course I say "fuck you"

I call it revenge for a bad time at a mining company
