That's really interesting and I have never seen that before! There is such a dearth of material on the ARNG.

First I've heard of it although not totally surprised by it though. From reading it they were basically transferring a USAR Hvy Bde from the first Army Area to the 6th Army. Considering the 157th MX BDE is the only Hvy Bde in USAR and was the First Army area. Also consider that the 157 BDE is in an area where they were having recruiting problems already if you consider the combining of three guard divisions to one. It really isn't surprising and might also explain the appearance of the heavy cav troop e/118th in the 1990s. It would be fairly easy to do.

Shrike,

I thought the same, I also wondered that since you there was a USAR Tank Bn already in Arizona that they would just raise an additional ARNG Tank Bn along with a Mech Bn for the Bde. Please let me know if you find more, especially the initial correspondence that this seems to be responding to.

Louie,
I thought about the 8-40th too. I also thought the 1-180th FA would eventually become the OPFORs FA battalion in the 90s, leaving the 2-180th for DS to this brigade. You could then convert the 153rd FA Bde HQ to be the HQ for this Heavy Bde (158th?). Makes one wonder where they intended to place the other elements. NM was scheduled to lose a large chunk ADA assets in the 90s. They might be able to provide a battalion. Just a thought.
If I come across more I'll post other than what I posted above.

Shrike, your research capabilities are impressive and a little frightening.

I hate to offer a suggestion that makes more work for you, but have you considered establishing a centralized and indexed archive for copies of this stuff (Dropbox, etc.) to act as a safeguard against dead links in the future?

I save the pdfs to my computer and a back up hard drive than sort them out when I feel like it. It wouldnt hurt to move some of it online at some point.

Thanks Paul,

This USAHEC is great, you find gems but it takes literally hours to go through. It also seems like Fourth US Army deposited all their papers there. Not so much on the others.
