In short, you take a Lee-Enfield rifle, convert it to magazine feed, then convert it to automatic fire. I have it statted out on this page:

http://www.pmulcahy.com/best_stuff_t...never_were.htm

There is an error in the entry; I have stated it was "a home-defense weapon for Australia during World War 2" -- It should have said "New Zealand."

Cool. Your site has the Semple Tank too, right?

In the Wikipedia article it says "Approximately 1,500 Charlton Automatic Rifles were manufactured in New Zealand, and nearly all of them were destroyed in a fire at the Palmerston North service storage facility shortly after World War II". I lived in Palmerston North from the age of two until my family moved to Australia when I was six. My mum was a founding member of the local motor racing club.

That's the Chauchat -- undoubtedly the worst piece of crap forced on any soldier. The stories of the horrors of the Chauchat are legion.

Yes, but it's still considered experimental. It's basically a long-range, pinpoint laser dazzler.

The TKB-408 was one of the competitors to the AK-47 (IIRC, made by Tokarev). The biggest problem with it was the arrangement of the magazine and pistol grip -- it's ergonomically bad.

But this one was considered better than the AK47...

It's sort of like the reasons why the US military refuses to replace the M-16/M-4 series with anything -- it's so completely embedded in the US military that no one wants to have to change training methods, get new rifles and parts in the supply chain, ditch the millions of 5.56mm rounds we have stockpiled, write new TMs and training manuals, and above all (at least right now in the US), spend the money it would take to transition to a new rifle. Total inertia.

Supposedly, no two of them were alike...that's how badly they were made.

Our joke in my 3rd ID reenacting group back home to mimic the sound of a Chauchat was to keep our mouth ajar while loosely slapping our cheek in a random rhythm.
