Default Info on Austria?

I've poked about a bit now and havn't seen much of anything about the conditions in Austria nor any chargen suggestions (All for V2.2) to making local characters. For the latter been using the german template, but curious to what others use. My main interest though is the conditions: who, what, and where. Have in mind something along the lines of lots of firebases owned by various factions with each of said factions either hindering the other and/or doing the hearts and minds thing.

It's been a while since I've read the v1.0 history. From memory, I think that most of the remains of the Austrian army get absorbed into the Unified German Bundeswehr sometime in late '98 or early '99 (Fourth Reich, anyone?). IIRC, by summer 2000, most of the Italian army has been kicked out but there might still be some hold-outs in the south of the country. There might also be some PACT units in the eastern and/or southern part of the Austria- Soviets and Czechs, mostly. I think one or two American units are listed as being in Austria as of the summer of 2000. I'm not sure if they leave in the fall after Operation Omega gets under way.

With all of the above-mentioned "factions" as well as your former PACT and NATO marauders, Austria strikes me as being a potentially very interesting European campaign setting.

EDIT: I just checked and the following U.S. Army units are listed as being on Austrian soil as of July, 2000:

U.S. 35th Infantry Division (Mechanized) near Linz- strength listed at 2000 infantry and 23 tanks.

U.S. 43rd Infantry Division near Innsbruck- 1000 infantry; 10 tanks

U.S. 1st Brigade, 40th Infantry Division (Mechanized) near Telfs- 400 infantry; 6 tanks

The following German units are also listed as being in Austria c. 2000:

1st Panzergrenadier Division near Worgl- 2500 infantry; 500 cavalry; 6 tanks

10th Panzer Division near Grins- 4000 infantry; 31 tanks

I'm still working on plotting PACT units south of Czechoslovakia.

Thanks for all the help so far, I've a basic idea of what forces are around according to the V2 veh. Guides, didn't know if anyone went into depth as to what else was going on. But as already mentioned it could be a good setting: Soviets, Czechs, Slovacks, Itialians, Germans, and Americans: not to mention random riffraff. Lots of factions to keep. PC's busy and looking over their shoulder. But, one thing that puzzled me is the seeming ease they was taken down: IIFC, they put a good deal of effort into fortifying their frontiers. In the 93-94 janes A&A it mentions around a 150 L7 armed centurian turrets dug in all over the place in addition to other fortifications not specified.

Another question to toss out here: Has there been any info published anywhere official or otherwise for austrian and italian forces located in Austria and its immediate surroundings?

Not unless Challenge Magazine put something out. The NATO Vehicle Guide mentions the following,

"In the summer of 1998, the 10th spearheaded the NATO drive into Austria to clear out the Pact units there. Although the offensive was not successful in clearing Austria, the 10th performed well. Many former Austrian soldiers found a home in the 10th, and it has remained in Austria as part of the IV German Corps."

There's no doubt that Soviet, Pact, & possibly Italian units are still in place on Austrian soil as of summer 2000 but I've never come across mention of specific units. I do not, however, have access to the 2TK Challenge articles. Anyone?

Here is what I mapped regarding canon units in Austria, no idea where I found them.

(forgive the width, but I needed the resolution)

Going from memory I seem to recall that a couple of Italian Divisions are listed in Going Home? One at least was supposed to be making its way back to Italy? Granted, that's V1...

(I'm posting this from work, so can't see Kato's map - they may be referenced on that...)

Going Home has the 5th Italian Corps HQ and Mantova Mechanised Division at Trento in Italy, and Ariete Armoured Division at Bolzano.
It's also got the Italian Folgore MD supported by the DIA out of Vienna but hasn't listed it's location besides "fighting their way back to Italy".

So it sounds like by and large the Italians are out of Austria then?

With only three units listed it's to hard to say at the moment. More research is required.
