Default HAARP

As a sidebar to the T2K background, one might consider the role this project played in the Twilight War:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Fr...search_Program

(I tried to put in one of those short links, but couldn't make it work. Could someone steer me to a tutorial? I even examined the source code on some other people's links and still couldn't make it work.)

Supposedly, according to a conspiracy-type program I just watched on the History Channel, the Soviets/Russians, the Chinese, the Indians, and the British have or have had similar projects. It might be interesting to someone when writing a chronology of the Twilight War. I'll grant you, it's one of those "out there" conspiracy theories and I don't really think the weather-modification aspect of HAARP is true, but it could make an interesting story for those of you on this board that are good at writing T2K history.

Thumbs down

If CERN's Large Hard-On Collider didn't create a black hole that swallowed the Earth or tear a rift in the dimensional fabric that let alien demons through then I doubt HAARP will set the ionosphere on fire or whatever the hell it's supposed to do.

I firmly think that HAARP is nothing more than a high-atmospheric research station in real life -- just what it says, a scientific station to study the aurora, ionosphere, and magnetic field. I an not saying in any way that IRL, it is anything else.

But I presented here as sort of an interesting sidebar to the Twilight War history -- god knows we T2Kers have made up a lot of alternate history for T2K in our respective campaigns. Maybe an adventure to Alaska could be devised -- maybe HAARP is, in the T2K timeline, actually screwing up weather and is "stuck on" and the players are dispatched with a team of scientists from Colorado Springs or somewhere to turn HAARP off. Or better, the players and the scientists have to penetrate deep into Siberia or Western China to turn off the Soviet or Chinese counterparts to HAARP. Something like that could be a priority mission, since rogue weather can really play hell with trying to recover civilization, and it could be the makings of a long-term adventure or even a whole campaign.

Sorry, Paul, I didn't mean to imply that you subscribe to any of the conspiracy theories surrounding HAARP, merely that they are retarded. It would make a cool plot device for an adventure in any timeline.

"Conspiracy theories
Main article: List of conspiracy theories#Development of weapons technology

HAARP is the subject of numerous conspiracy theories, with individuals ascribing various hidden motives and capabilities to the project. Journalist Sharon Weinberger called HAARP "the Moby Dick of conspiracy theories" and said the popularity of conspiracy theories often overshadows the benefits HAARP may provide to the scientific community.[14][15] Skeptic computer scientist David Naiditch called HAARP "a magnet for conspiracy theorists", saying the project has been blamed for triggering catastrophes such as floods, droughts, hurricanes, thunderstorms, and devastating earthquakes in Afghanistan and the Philippines aimed to "shake up" terrorists. Naiditch says HAARP has been blamed for diverse events including major power outages, the downing of TWA Flight 800, Gulf War Syndrome and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, as well as the Columbine High School shootings. Conspiracy theorists have also suggested links between HAARP and the work of Nikola Tesla (particularly potential combinations of HAARP energy with Tesla's work on pneumatic small-scale earthquake generation) and physicist Bernard Eastlund. According to Naiditch, HAARP is an attractive target for conspiracy theorists because "its purpose seems deeply mysterious to the scientifically uninformed".[16]

Conspiracy theorists have also raised the possibility that HAARP may have played a role in the devastating, highly damaging earthquakes that occurred in Sichuan, China in 2008, and Haiti and Chile in 2010. A piece on a Venezuelan state-run television channel's website blamed HAARP as a cause of the 2010 Haiti earthquake.[17][18][19]"

Let's see how hard you guys laugh when I coordinate with TPTB to have the HAARP array zap your houses.

Laugh then!

IIRC, the main "use" of HAARP in weather control (according to the show anyway) was to start bouncing hurricanes back into the Atlantic starting in 2006 (after the Russians or Chinese attacked us with Katrina in 2005 ...)

Hey, Eddie, do you need a forward observer with LOS or a designator painting the target to call HAARP fire or do you just use your unit's goat-staring psychic Jedi remote viewer?

At least you're better off than Louisiana. I'm cutting the grass twice a week now.

It would be amusing to run some adventures set in Alaska where the PCs (either Western or Soviet) gradually discover that the entire purpose of the Soviet invasion of Alaska was to capture or destroy the HAARP facility, being convinced it was some sort of US super weapon, only to find out eventually (and at ridiculous cost) that it's just a cool energy hog that generates some cool aurora borealis locally.

that it is in fact an evil super villain wet dream machine that can generate storms ,droughts, earthquakes etc etc and then they can try to get control of it themselves and try their hand at super villainous life.

"This just in - Super Villains capture East Coast!"

Well, that could mean that it has some intact or even functioning high-capacity generators on-site.

Don't forget the Soviet installations, Duga 1, 2 and 3. I think number 3 was better known as the Russian Woodpecker
Here's the wiki link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_Woodpecker
Here's the weirdo link http://www.philipcoppens.com/woodpecker.html
He mentions psychotronics which is completely bogus, in the last twenty years the term has changed it's meaning from some type of psychic transference energy weaponry to some sort of mind-control device.
I personally think a mind-control device is boring as batshite but the earlier meaning was far more interesting. Allegedly a psychotronic device could transfer the energy of an explosion to a target site via remote means so if you had a photo of the target, a weapon could be detonated within the psychotronic field in the deepest, darkest forest of Siberia for example and then delivered to the target where-ever else in the world it may be in a split second
Oh and it could also control the weather but doesn't everything conspiracy related these days

That doesn't even make sense to me; maybe some advanced civilization who understands laws of physics we don't know could do it, but I doubt even that one. It sound like something a five-year-old came up with. I'll have to check out that particular conspiracy theory so I can have a good laugh!

EDIT: OK, these people are definitely our kin. They've been playing too much Dark Conspiracy!

I remember hearing the Russian Woodpecker on the shortwave bands in the 1970s and 1980's. Some radios even had a special filter to filter out it's noise.
