If the Soviet Union had lasted past the '80s, it's possible, if not likely, that some of its constituent "republics" could have attempted to break away anyway, especially those in the Caucuses region. Lord knows some actually did immediately after the fact and there was fighting in the area between various factions (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova [E. Europe]). Suppressing these internal rebellions would have given the Soviets valuable operational and tactical experience and resulted in attempts at rapid modernization. It would have also increased tensions with the international community as I am sure such conflicts would be viewed by many as violent, anti-democratic repression.
And then there's the PRC. Border conflicts between the USSR and China were (and still are, to a degree) a possibility. This, of course, is where WWIII essentially starts in the v1.0 timeline.

I agree with Raellus and that would pause the problem of the Baltic States and Ukraine.
Another interesting fact comes from the braking away from those republics as well. In my own timeline, I use South Ossetia, Abkhazia and Crimea. Crimea IMO is the most interesting event. It attempted to brake away from Ukraine on May 5 1992, establishing its first constitution on the next day. Crimea agreed to remain part of Ukraine only two weeks later in exchange for expended autonomy and under pressure by Moscow. What if...
