When taking a moderate or more serious injury the character has a chance of going into shock which makes them unconscious. Obviously a knocked out fighter is out of the fight, though they may later wake up and start fighting again.

Although depending on their morale and general toughness they might run away as well. Being outnumbered, automatic fire, explosives and seeing your buddy get shot can be enough to panic a weekend warrior even before they get injured.
