4th edition did away with the miracle handheld medical device. It's now just a kit with some drugs, an injector for the drugs, bandages, tourniquets and a space blanket. No more automatic diagnosis and treatment.

Yes we went thru a number of characters on a regular basis during our campaigns. The frozen watch concept, when it was introduced in a magazine helped out greatly getting new characters into the game later on down the road.

Any characters that couldn't go on, we usually left them with a friendly community we befriended/helped out with materials and knowledge during our travels. We kept in touch by radio for as long as we could and if our travels brought us back into the area we would visit them as NPC's. Most lived on and helped the community grow.
