OT—Trading Skills
In the v1 character generation scheme, a player could favor one attribute and slight another. I’d like to do that in my life right now. I’m taking an intermediate algebra class and a chemistry class. I’m outside my comfort zone. I’m not failing, but I’m not doing as well as my grades suggest. Perhaps it would be better to say that my grades suggest a greater mastery of the skill than I feel I have.
At this time in my life, I’d love to swap some old, unneeded native ability for new talent. I’d be glad to trade up my ability with a 40mm grenade launcher for a greater intuitive sense about math. I can hit a man-sized target at 150 meters in 2% visibility—conditions under which I can’t see both target and front sight post at the same time. From the prone (in daylight), I can put a grenade within 5 meters of a target that I can’t see when I actually fire the grenade launcher. I just put my head up far enough to catch a glimpse of the target, then fire on where I remember the target being. I don’t know how I do it. I’ll blow the one easy shot on the range and ace all of the tough ones. At least, I used to. Maybe it’s the Force. Anyway, that’s a native talent I’d gladly swap for improved intuition about how numbers have to get juggled to figure out the speed of two different objects and how to start a string of conversion factors so that I never have to break the string to turn molarity of one solution into mL of another. I’d also give up a lamentable talent for machine gunnery that doesn’t appear to have many civilian applications. Any skills you boys would swap if you could? Webstral |
