******************** Enforcer 12-06-2005, 12:33 AM Off the top of my head, I do remember the P-38 as having 4 .50 cals, 1 20mm, dual engines with supercharger (for speed and to compress the air at high altitude), and the germans called it the fork tailed devil. It has one pilot, and could carry two drop tanks. As far as the speed, manueverability or anything like that, sorry, I don't have those stats (I think it also had the ability to carry unguided rockets, but not sure on this either). ******************** copeab 12-06-2005, 01:18 AM any one got the stats on a WWII P-38 lightening? i was going to use one in the info i have written on the NA cell in the cunberland gap, due to the fact there is one there on display, part of the lost squadron that crash landed on the ice of greenland. the plane is called the "Glacier Gal" :satanfork P-38L Armament: One 20mm (150 rounds), four .50-cal (500 rpg), up to 4,000* lbs bombs and rockets underwing (one photo shows 14 rockets). * some sources list this as 3,200 lbs (two 1,600 lb bombs) instead Performance: 414 mph @ 25,000 feet, 44,000 ft ceiling, 450 miles on 410 gallons internal fuel. Weights: 12,800 empty and 17,600 gross Dimensions: 52 foot wingspan, 38 feet long, 13 feet high. ******************** TiggerCCW UK 12-06-2005, 04:18 AM I seem to remember they had problems with Lightenings crashing because they could dive too fast, and then not pull out. Not 100% sure what the problem was, but it might be worth a few extra pilot rolls. ******************** copeab 12-06-2005, 05:25 AM I seem to remember they had problems with Lightenings crashing because they could dive too fast, and then not pull out. Not 100% sure what the problem was, but it might be worth a few extra pilot rolls. I believe some modified (not production) P-38's could break the sound barrier in a dive. As the aircraft was not built for this, the planes tended to rip apart. Brandon ******************** |
