Default Soviet Trucks

Like any military, the Soviets fielded a variety of jeeps and trucks to support the "sexier" tanks/IFVs/APCs. Since an Army marches on its stomach...here is the unsexy side of the military!

The oldest (read Category III and Mobilization only units) is the UAZ-69. This first appeared in 1943 and is a light utility 4x4 vehicle, it has room for a driver and passenger and up to 600kg of cargo or it can tow up to 850kg. It is 4.025m long, 1.805m wide, 2.05m high and weighs in at 1,540kg. It has a max speed of 100 km/h and a road range of 460km. It uses gasoline (60L tank). It can be easily transported by air and can be air dropped.

The UAZ-469 appeared in 1952, it is a light 4x4 cargo vehicle. It has room for a driver and passenger and can carry 650kg internally or tow up to 800kg. It is 3.85m long, 1.85m wide, 2.03m high and weighs in at 1,525kg. It has a max speed of 90km/h and a road range of 540km. It is gasoline powered (48L tank). This is noramlly seen with a rag-top and hard doors.

What, no Studebaker trucks? Studebakers were beloved by the Russians due to Lend-Lease, and many became or were copied into becoming Katyushas. If you look really closely at many late 40's/early 50's utility vehicles, you can see the Yankee-made bloodline running close to the surface--the UAZ was a quick knock-off of the Willys Jeep, the BRDM-1 was a beefed-up clone of the GPA "SEEP" amphibious Jeep (unloved by the Allies, adored by the Soviets), many of the Deuce-and-a-Halfski trucks look like Studebakers, and the 4-wheeled M3 White Scout car, many of which made the Lend-Lease route, evolved into a 6-wheeled Soviet armored transport--BTR-152, Let's not forgetthe the Soviet Bear bomber was reverse-engineered from a B-29 that made a forced landing flying over Russian territory.

It was the TU4 although its lineage does extend to the Bear.

Apologies, the Tu-4 Bull is the clone; the Bear is much further divergent in design.

Early versions of the Ural 4320 were fitted with the Kamaz 740 V8 diesel engine. ohv, displacement 10,857 cc (bore/stroke 4.72"), compression ratio 16:1. Power 210 PS (154 kW; 207 hp) at 2,600 rpm. Torque 470 lb·ft (640 N·m) at 1,500 rpm.

The Ural-4320 is a general purpose off-road 6x6 truck, produced at the Ural Automotive Plant in Miass, Russia for use in the Russian army. Introduced in 1976, it is still in production today. The wheel arrangement for the Ural-4320 was designed for transporting cargo, people and trailers on all types of roads and terrain. It also serves as a launching platform for the BM-21 "Grad" rocket launcher.

The Ural-4320 is a diesel-powered development of the Ural-375D. The Ural-4320 chassis has good ground clearance, so it is preferred in regions where roads are difficult to traverse due to sand or big rocks. In the proverbial Russian tradition, the Ural-4320 is reliable and easy to repair and maintain. It has civilian uses as a fire truck, a garbage truck, or a logging truck. It is also used for water, oil and gas drilling using the 1BA15 and URB-3A3 drilling rigs, which are mounted on the Ural-4320 chassis.

Why innovate when the "technology donor" has done all the legwork and worked out the bugs?

The R-14 Chusovaya (Russian: Чусовая) was a theatre ballistic missile developed by the Soviet Union during the Cold War. The missile was gradually replaced by SS-20 missiles and by the mid 1980s most had been taken out of service. The last missiles was scrapped on August 9, 1989.

The design of the MAZ-537 series began during the early 1960s to produce a heavy load carrier and construction vehicle for use in remote areas. It is a further development of the MAZ-535 8x8 artillery tractor. Production of the MAZ-537 commenced in 1963 and it was first observed in 1964. Production of all variants was carried out at the Mink Motor Vehicle Plant. Most versions of the MAZ-537 are used as tank transporters. Despite it's age this heavy military vehicle is still in service with a number of countries, including Russia.

The MAZ-537 tank transporter can tow semi-trailers with medium and main battle tanks with a maximum weight of 50 000 kg both on roads and rugged terrain. It is still capable of towing any MBT currently in service with the Russian Army.

A forward control cab provides seating for driver and three passengers.

The MAZ-537 is powered by a standard tank engine, developing 525 hp. It is worth mentioning, that this engine had a short service life. Vehicle has a full-time all-wheel drive. There is a power assisted steering of front four wheels. Standard equipment includes an engine pre-heater, to assist starting in cold climate, and powerful cab heaters. A central tyre inflation system is fitted, to provide better traction over sand and soft ground.

From the MAZ-535/537 series the MAZ-543 evolved as a specialist carrier vehicle which was also used to carry numerous missile and rocket systems such as the SS-1 Scud series, the SS-12 Scaleboard and the SSC-3 coastal defense missile. In the early 80s the tank transporter version was succeeded by the KZKT-7428 Rusich.
