Heavy civil defence shelter

This one is located under market square in Hakaniemi, Helsinki.

Built in 2001.

Construction time: 13 months

Peace time use: Sport venue and car park.

Three shelter tunnels have been carved out of natural rock.

Largest tunnel is 230 meters long, 21 meters wide and seven meters tall. All tunnels are 30 meters beneath city streets. Shelter space for 6000 people. All shelters are outfitted with self-contained power and ventilation systems, sanitary facilities, and emergency supplies.
