Cool.

I was always told it was the best rank. Most other soldiers need to listen to you, but you are not so far up that you attract attention.

Congregations yes, it is the same rank. The real question that I have is what about position? A Sergeant in the US Army is normally a fire team leader (for infantry type) or a gunner (for tank type) but other branches have different positions with same rank. For example I have seen USMC troops who lead a fire team as a Lance Corporal (E-3) and a Squad at E-5. I have worked with USAF troops who were in charge of a group (not sure what it was called) about squad size at Master Sergeant (E-7).

I would say that best rank IMO is SSG (E-6) you are in charge of a squad/tank but not in charge of the paperwork.

Good job! Make someone push to show your leadership potential. Nothing screams sergeant major potential like unhappy troops.

The best rank ever, at least in the US Army, is Spec-4: Senior enough that you don't get pimped out to the worst (if at all) details 'voluntarily' but yet not a Junior NCO either, so you don't get pimped out to 'voluntarily' lead said details.

There is a reason it's called Spec-4 Mafia.

But yeah, that said, E5 is probably the last of the really great ranks. Once you get past that, you get faced with more and more paperwork and less and less time in the mud.

Tech Sergeant is E-6. Master Sergeant is E-7 (to the zoomies).

I actually had my first team leader assignment at E-3 (PFC in the Army). I got promoted to E-4 soon after that, and then they made me a Corporal and a Squad Leader. Took me a while to get E-5 after that, because I PCSed in the middle of the promotion process (not something I recommend to anyone, though it worked out.)

Corporal sucks in a way, because you really are an NCO, but you don't really have any status or rank.
