Default 45 years ago today

For the first time, Man took a step beyond the Earth. The mighty Saturn V rocket lifted off from Cape Kennedy. Its' destination...The Moon...And the landing of the first humans on another world.

I know I held my breath...WILLING that monster off of the launch pad. Knowing that there were 7.5 MILLION horsepower of thrust being channeled.

Oh No!!! Please do not tell me you are one of the "Moon Landing on a sound stage" people.

They made it. If for no other reason, the passive laser mirrors are still on the moon. You can not fake a laser reflection that takes 2+ seconds to travel from the earth to the moon and back.

I am adding this today, even though the anniversary is not until tomorrow. I have to work tonight and then go right back to work in the morning. (Sigh )

I Remember this like it was yesterday. There were Humans ON THE MOON!!!

And then.....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=csO9VTtrg5A

The first tentative steps.... The fact that MOST OF THE WORLD was watching...

With one exception.

IIRC, Mao was swimming in the Yangtzee River. Of course all of China was watching him.

Default Moon Landing

I grew up a grade-school NASA addict. I was already a science fiction fan, and here was LANDING ON ANOTHER PLANET(oid) FOR REAL!

I was away at summer camp, and they had wheeled a large, staticky B&W television for us to watch. Wow, even so.

I have wondered in later years about the crew of Apollo 10 a few months earlier, going down in the lander to within 10 miles of the surface of the moon. How did they avoid the temptation to declare an in-flight emergency and land anyway?

I was six. I managed to stay up for 23 hours -- a record for me at the time.

I was -9 months (conceived on the night of the landing).

Then born on the day Apollo 13 had their explosion.

Thus I feel pretty connected to the US Space program.

It was just before my fourth birthday and I stayed up and watched the landing - basically almost didnt sleep the entire time - and told my mother I would build those one day - and ended up a Space Shuttle Engineer with Rockwell

and it definitely happened - sorry conspiracy theorists but it happened

In a way, there was a disappointment -- we were the first ones in the neighborhood to have a color TV, and all the moon footage was black and white.

Default The ultimate love fest

I am posting this tonight even though the actual anniversary is not until tomorrow.

The Woodstock Music Festival began on Max Yasgur's farm outside of Bethel, NY. Eventually there were between 400 to 500 thousand people living in the mud, grooving to some of the best music, smoking a LOT of dope.
