2nd Infantry Division at Cam Ranh Bay
Does anyone have any idea why the 2nd Infantry Division is listed as being in Vietnam from 1991 to 1996?
This would seem to leave no US units in Korea between those dates. |

In V2 I think the Koreas reunified. The years seem wrong as IIRC the unification was in 1994, but that might explain it.

That always mystified me as well - there really was no real world event that would explain a US division being in Vietnam again during that time frame

If the US marines were kicked out of Okinawa (as seems to be threatened every couple of years when there is a serviceman incident), you could move them to Cam Ranh Bay.
Also when I was in Korea i remember reading a suggestion that the 2nd Infantry leave Korea and that the 3rd Marine Division move into some bases nearer Busan. I believe the primary motivator was to free up valuable real estate close to Seoul. Last edited by kato13; 10-16-2014 at 11:51 PM. |

That does look like the reason given the changes in unit history between v1 and v2.x in the vehicle guides. Thanks.

In the real world, they'd like us back to replace the Russians who left. I think they offered very good SOFA terms to Clinton, but it never happened. In T2K2 V2 The 2nd is sent there after unified Korea released them from treaty obligations.

Designer mistake? That's what I always put it down to.

I would think a better idea (never run V2 but if I do as a GM I would proceed this way) would be the 2nd broken up between Vietnam and Korea, with the US in the middle of a phased withdrawal from Korea that was scheduled to happen before the war began and then when the war breaks out the 2nd is spread out between both nations.

In my T2030 universe, Vietnam is a major , albeit secondary, front in the war between the New SEATO and the PRC (Korea being the other). I've got the reactivated U.S. 7th ID (Light) and 23rd ID (Mechanized) there, as well as major elements from the 101st Air Assault and 2nd MarDiv (these last two having arrived first). In addition to U.S. and Vietnamese troops, there are elements of the Australian, New Zealand, UK, Philippines, and Japanese fighting forces present as well (all fighting on behalf of New SEATO).

I can see that working. Perhaps one of the Mech Brigades goes to Ft Lewis (which happened IRL), while another stays. The Air Assault/Mech element could move Viet Nam. |
