So, im a huge fan of the metal gear series of video games. Most of them are stealth games, but in the most recent game (but the middle of the whole storyline, wtf) the main character has begun his own mercenary company/nation. Instead of linear stealth levels inside buildings or crowded jungles, there are massive open world maps in Afghanistan and the angola-ziaire border in 1984. Instead of stealth being the only way to survive, you now have the ability to do things your own way; frontal assaults, hit and run, call in a gunship or missle strike... And managing your 'mother base', an old oil rig converted and ungraded with several conjoined platforms that serve various purposes. You recruit/capture-n-convert soldiers to fight for you, send them on mission, capture enemy resources, vehicles, and heavy weapons, and research and improve your small arms, gather Intel via your spy network, treat wounds, sickness, and PTSD via in house med bay... The list goes on. The storyline for the game series takes place within our own timeline, until about 2009 and onward. It's an excellent series with a riveting plot, memorable characters, and a surprising amount of depth. T2k/merc2000 would be a perfect system for an RPG adaptation. Idk if anybody here has played or heard about it, but its worth a look.

Playing now and mostly done with the opening Afghanistan level.
It's quite fun. Definitely has some head scratchers in terms of realism (the balloons), but I prefer the infiltration feel to more blast away combat games. Not sure how sold I am on managing the mercenaries and having to go back to the base to get saluted all the time, but I'm having fun. Definitely a good extension of the MGS franchise with some new twists. |

I think it's interesting in 5 how they chose to make weapons and vehicles similar to IRL ones by combining several kinds together instead of in previous games using IRL ones. For example, the UN rifle seems to be a hybrid between a G3 and an FAL, standard 556 rifle; ar-18 and FN-CAL, the Soviet rifle; an AK-47/74 and a VZ-58, the bullpup 556; an HK G11 and a FAMAS. The list goes on.

Playing peace walker was a good transition, IMO.

And I love the immersion into the mercenary world. Metal gear always does a great job weaving its story into history.
