Default I am now a proud owner of a near mint condition copy of The Last Battle

It is just gorgeous. All counters included, every one unpunched. It even SMELLS new.

It's just fantastic. And only $39 on eBay!

Now to finish up buying modules from the FLGS and my T2k v.1 collection will be complete.

Nice!
I remember buying my copy of Last Battle, it was second-hand and you could tell that just from looking at the box.
Still, when I bought it, nothing was missing and the contents were in decent condition.

So a near mint copy is a major score (I'm even a little envious that it's got that "new" smell - that was always one of those little pleasures when buying new books and such like).

I know, right? I almost don't want to punch the counters

I'll post up some photos. Honestly I can't believe how good this copy is.

Here's the gallery of images; they're terrible (my phone is awful and I'm a lousy photographer anyway) but they show it is 100% complete - even has the GDW feedback/registration card!

"I'm now the proud owner of a mint copy of The Last Battle.
There's information nuclear, biological and chemical.
It's got the OOBs, T&Es, and CRTs and charts,
For killing off your enemies by blasting them to many parts."
(with apologies to Mssrs. Gilbert and Sullivan)

Now I am totally envious. That looks like you bought it brand new and just unwrapped it from the plastic!

I know right.

I'm curious as to whether or not those are the actual dice, now.

So I finally got to dig in to this set, a little.

The game, despite the highly detailed board wargames GDW had done before, is fairly sparse. I can't help but think that perhaps they were looking to do add-on modules at a later date but didn't get around to it. There's aircraft included - but only in the case of a module for Free City of Krakow (the Mi-17, and it alone). The number of vehicles is fairly limited as well, although there's worksheets for statting up your own.

One of the most immediate "WTF" moments is in a battle designed around "Armies of the Night"; the introductory text for the scenario says "New York was struck by two nuclear weapons..."

Maybe the consideration was that whomever bought The Last Battle wouldn't be that deep into T2k lore, but the game itself practically demands it in all other aspects. So that's a pretty serious mistake.

Anyway, back to reading...

If you're interested in reading another impression of Last Battle, this guy describes his interested in T2k but quickly gets into the Last Battle.
He has similar thoughts to you but in his case it's more "don't expect Last Battle to give realistic outcomes and you'll find it's actually a fun game to play".
Anyway, his blog his here: -

Congrats on your find. I love finding older games at bargain prices. I have begun haunting this flea market that always has a comic book vendor at it. He likes AD&D (1st edition) and Magic the Gathering but gives good deals on other games. I bought a hardcopy of the World Tamer's Handbook for just $3 from him. I got lucky because those are rare.

That was a very good read. I'm eager to someday kick off an "Against the Giants" level T2k campaign but I'm not holding my breath at the moment.

Nice; 1e AD&D is my jam, but T2k is a close second once we get out of the fantasy arena.

I like mixing Boot Hill and AD&D. I'm trying to multi task GDW stuff...…

Have you tried AD&D and science fiction? Believe it or not S3 makes it a snap. In fact, you could combine all three. "Slugthrowers" and explosives and so on from Boot Hill, science fiction items from S3, and other items and mental powers from Gamma World (cf. "Sixguns & Sorcery", S3 Expedition to the Barrier Peaks, "Mutants & Magic", the first and last being in the Dungeon Masters Guide).

Just a thought/suggestion.
