Something I stumbled upon by accident and although it's showing current railway infrastructure and not layouts by historical era, someone might find it useful.

The legend expands as you zoom in and covers such things as bridges, tunnels, main lines, narrow gauge, spur lines, high speed lines, light rail, miles stones, junctions, tram stops, rail yards and also disused, abandoned and razed tracks.
As an open source project it only has whatever information the contributors have added but there is so much there already that it's probably a far more useful source than many of the other railway maps we've used in the past. And it project deals with the whole planet so yeah, you can check out the railway situation in Poland, Germany or Kenya for example.
