I did some American Civil War reenacting while I was living in California (a buddy got me into it...I don't remember what the unit was supposed to be) and some Frontier Army (both 7th Cavalry and 17th Infantry) while living in North Dakota.

I'd say its a bad idea to point a rifle (fake or not) at police. Assuming that's what actually happened. Regardless, it's sad either way. |

Problem is regarding the weapon(this might be in retrospect if the police weren't used to dealing with reenactors), that weapon was fully functioning, even moreso because it was a bolt action, manually operated piece. Thus, no blank adaption was necessary...he could have loaded a live round in and fired it just as easily as a blank 7.92 round.
The guy sounds like an idiot from the way I have read it. Put it down. No. Put it down. No. Stop pointing it at me...ah jesus...BANG BANG BANG BANG. |

Yeah, either the kid was drunk or just plain idiotic when it comes to dealing with police and how they respond to having weapons pointed at them. I mean, the article said he had already fixed bayonet on the rifle, so it was, loaded or not, a deadly weapon. Refusing to drop it when you're looking down the business end of two pistols is just stupid.

He might have been doing a "suicide by cop".
I have worked with some police from the Chicago and the Milwaukee areas two of whom were involved in shootouts. One shootout, in Milwaukee involved two policemen and two drugdealers, everyone armed, everyone emptied thier guns, no one got hit. the other shootout involved one of the nicer guy's I know, In the Chicago area, routine traffic stop. His partner went up to the side of the car saw the driver with a gun, yelled "gun" they both drew and fired killing both the driver and passenger(caught in the cross fire). A cops mantra is to go home safe after shift. Ironically the Chicago policeman does reenacting for WWII (101 airborne stuff) he showed me pics of some of his get togethers.
